This is just a little note to any XTC fanatics that may live near
Athens, GA.
The Helium Kidz (yeah, not the originals :) will be playing December 8
at the Atomic Music Hall in Athens. We'll be playing approximately
15 XTC tunes.
Songs include: Respectable Street, Grass, Mayor of Simpleton, Life
Begins at the Hop, All of a Sudden, Real by Reel,
Vanishing Girl, Making Plans For Nigel,
Jason & the Argonauts, This Is Pop?, Knuckle Down,
Towers of London, Don't Lose Your Temper,
Living Through Another Cuba
There may be others. We're still learning songs. A noticeable Black Sea
bent, but hey its tough playing the latter day stuff with 4 people!
We played once last year and were met with great enthusiasm.
This year's show looks to be bigger and better.

Unless you live in GB, you'll probably have to buy it as an import. It's a collection on songs recorded from 1977-1989, and they were recorded live, in a studio (no audience) for BBC radio, like the Peel sessions. Someone said that there are overdubs, but I suspect there weren't (i have no evidence for this opinion). The songs are very close to the originals, but with less production. IMHO, they are also very good, with the possible exceptin of Roads Girdle the Globe, which just couldn't equal the original. Other than that, a great disk, and I'd recommend it. Hey gang...
I'm glad to report that I received my copy of The Little Express. This is a
great XTC fanzine, a must for anyone who follows the band. I received four
issues already and will send my check in soon for renewal.
Speaking of "Newell" :-), there are some interesting photos of Martin Newell
in the lastest issue, playing a gig in France. He looks way cool: thin, with
a tartan vest and that signature "Dickens" hat. I have heard from a Japanese
friend (Shigemasa Fujimoto) that Newell toured Japan as well. I would have
loved to have seen him live! Shigemasa said it was excellent.
The latest issue of TLE has my artwork in it (inside back cover). I never
expected them to use it in such a conspicuous spot, but they did a great job
of laying it out, surrounding it with vintage psychedelic posters and
(non)such. Of course this issue also has some great photos of the band, along
with clippings and some excellent interviews, reviews, and artwork.
Also, this weekend I saw Sam Phillips on VH1. She was in a "new age"-style
tea shop and was sipping various herbal teas (no, she didn't say, "You can't
get the buttons these days."). She's really pretty in a delicate sort of way,
something that's not obvious from the way she's made up to look on "Martinis
and Bikinis." Too bad she's married, cuz I'm single...
To answer a few of the questions posed in the last Chalkhills: no, no, yes,
no, yes...
Um, someone is saying "smoke" (not that dirty word), in "Great Fire."
Followed by "curling 'round the door."
No, "Drums and Wireless" is a legitimate release - "Made in England" says the
sticker on the front of my copy.
Does anyone know where I can get the Mayor of Simpleton single with "The Good
Things" and "Living in a Hanunted Heart"? (Preferably in excellent condition
and either on CD or vinyl.) Let me know.

i have played classical piano for most of my life, and in several listenings of
xtc, i've noticed that their last three albums have several pieces with
great piano parts to them ("wrapped in grey," "ballet for a rainy day," "chalk-
hills and children"). as it is, i have "mayor of simpleton" in a single sheet
format -- but does anyone know if there are any collections of their songs,
not transcribed into that "easy reading" single note stuff, but still retaining
the songs' original complexity? you can either email me privately, or post,
but be sure to mention whether they are available in US, or if i'll have to
schedule a flight to europe to get my greedy little hands on them.

I regret that this is not a totally XTC relevant posting, but I must
recommend that you all go see THE PUSH STARS this Saturday, 10pm, at the
Middle East Cafe'. Did I say recommend, I meant DEMAND. Both song
writers are Partridge influenced, and judging from their demo tape they
are headed for a good future. Incidentally, the bassist is a huge Colin
Moulding fan, and his playing certainly reflects this! Go see, and tell
me what you think.
Oh, I may as well offer my two cents to a question that has
probably been answered already. That is not Andy saying "fuck" on
Great Fire, but the word "smoke" in the line "smoke, curling round the
door". It is an honest mistake. Listen again, it sounds smokey.

I've been collecting/enjoying/listening to XTC even since the 3DEP, way back in those glory days. Even have the fabled 4-songs-free-from-Record-Mirror-EP (which contained 4 different Virgin bands, on a regular black vinyl 7 inch, with the old blue Virgin labels, no picture sleeve. The XTC track is a live version of "Traffic Light Rock" produced by John Leckie. I think this is the only place this has been released.) At any rate, here's my offering for this time: Just picked up the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs Ultradisc II CD of "Skylarking." It sold for $24.99 at Best Buy. Sadly, there is no "Mermaid Smiled" here and no extra tracks. But the sounds is truly amazing! There is such a difference, the album sounds nearly brand new all over again. Very impressive. On comparison, the regular Geffen U.S. version sounds flat and lifeless. The Virgin U.K. release (and think mine was pressed in Germany) sounds much better. But the Ultradisc easily tops them both. Blur Boy I really hate to bring this up, especially after that long undying thread we recently had, BUT, I never posted anything to that thread and I just have to make a comment about - BLUR. I remember just before that thread started I had seen the video for "Girls & Boys" (or whatever) on Em-TeeVee and kinda liked it. Thought it was a bit odd, and was also reminded in some strange way of XTC. I dunno, just kinda popped into my head - then that thread started suddenly. Well I'm here to say that I just got the disc "Parklife" yesterday and I'm really astonished at all the negative comments it received here! It's a highly diversified album. Very unusual and imaginative. I heard many references to XTC, the Beatles, Matthew Sweet, oh... and even Martin Newell! Note these were bands that I was reminded of while listening, not that I heard specific references. You absolutely can NOT judge this disc by hearing only one track! Every track was a new surprise. They vary from the opening almost techno-pop tune to some good new-wavish jams to some strings/easy listening-type tunes to quasi-hardcore thrash to carnival music! Even some offbeat very-english Bonzo Dog Band type stuff. They are definately English, and remind me a lot of some early 80's new wave stuff like The Jags or 4 Out Of 5 Doctors. Whatever - sorry 'bout that, I just felt a need to speak up for them. I'm not saying they're the best thing I've heard, but they are very interesting to hear and should be given a chance. And sorry about the lack of XTC content, but - the first band I was reminded of when I first heard them was --- XTC, Drums & Wires era. Keep it fast & bulbous! Subject: An X (Tx) C Story
My name is Eric Leikam. I'm a radio DJ from Houston, Tx. My first
exposure to XTC came with the domestic release of English Settlement. My
boss and I would listed to the whole record and work. It was a blast! It
wasn't long before
I could "air-drum" to Senses Working Overtime. BTW whatever happened to that
video? When I was a freshman at UH I was on the concert committee. The
first show I did was The Police on the Zenyatta Mondatta tour. The album
had just been released and was starting to catch fire. The show had to
be moved from Cullen Auditorium to the larger Houston Music Hall which had
just been remodled. It was my job to try and keep people from smoking.
Ha! The opening act was XTC. Halfway through the show I gave up trying
to do my job and jumped into the orchestra pit. I stayed there for the
rest of the concert. I was so close I couldn't see Terry Chambers or
Stuart Copeland. After the show I went to their hotel. I found Andy and
Colin in the bar.
They were congenial but didn't really want to be disturbed. They
mentioned something about wanting to go to Gilley's. When I told them
that it was some 20 miles away in Pasadena they lost interest. I also
met The Police that night.
Over the years I've kept tabs on the guys through albums and
reading interviews particularly Musician Magazine. In 1989 when Oranges
& Lemons was released the guys did a radio station tour to support it.
As you know they played "unplugged" live everywhere they went. They visited
my station KRBE and I recorded them. I remember they played "scarecrow
People", "Love On A Farmboy's Wages", "Senses Working Overtime" and a
couple others. Anyway, there was a guy on staff who was an even bigger
XTC fan than me. He took the tape and departed the station shortly
thereafter. I've lost track of him. His name is David Redemann. If
anyone knows anything about David or this tape please e-mail me. The
performances on the tape were simply breathtaking!
That evening Geffen treated us to dinner (we enjoyed it. It was only
gas and chemicals) with XTC at Ruggles
Grill. Andy sat on my right, Dave directly across and Colin two seats
down. My friend David was talking Dukes with Colin and I talked about
everything else with Andy. They were all quite friendly and glad to see
such dedicated fans in the heart of Texas.
Sorry, I got carried away there. I got so much to say but I'm afraid
it'll all come out wrong.

Case in point: we all have our stories about turning someone else on to XTC, but how many times have we made tapes for friends of what we considered the "best" songs, songs that when assembled together weren't even fair to the unwitting recipient, who would, with an audible "snap", go insanely bonkers over XTC - and then we find out later the friend listened to a few songs and casually dismissed the tape. Some may say it's just preference - I think it's more than that. ...I just read the above, and it seems incredibly elitist. Rag-n-Bone, which has a lot of other great tunes on it as well. In the same vein as Ayanna's original question, I feel the same way about "I Remember the Sun" which is right up there with "Chalkhills and Children" for yanking my heart out and doing a little two-step on it, yet very few people even mention it, and some who do don't even like it. I must admit I get very confused - am I hearing the same song? Done rambling...back into lurk mode... P.S. - a while back I mentioned that I played a few XTC songs with my band and also on the piano, and a couple of people asked for notation. My apologies for not responding - I really haven't had much time, and don't know any of the common notations, like tabulature. I don't understand why this band has such a profound effect on me but I am seriously in tune to their whole feel. Any news on new items or recordings would be appreciated. I have a collection that would probably warrant a B+ with hardcore collectors but I still need more. If I am correct, XTC were the first band to perform on MTV's Unplugged. Back in the days of vinyl, I grabbed everything I could find by them. I bought the imported lp of "English Settlement" because the U.S. release on Epic was only 1 disc. And so forth. All my vinyl has since been lost. I'm delighted that the Geffen CDs include oodles of B-sides and obscure tracks. And I'm still grabbing everything I can find. I found out about this mailing list last night at my local CD purveyor. I was buying "Drums and Wireless" and the owner and I discovered that we are apparently *the* two XTC fans in Sacramento, though he went to Illinois for the XTC convention and I didn't. Hello Everyone!!
I can't believe I'm actually on an XTC newsgroup!
I found out about this newsgroup on the "alt.music.progressive"
line and got so psyched!! I have never had much contact with fellow
XTCers; I'm just so glad that there are people willing to talk about
one of the greatest, most talented bands of our times!
I started listening to XTC when "Making Plans for Nigel" came
out, oh so many years ago. I listened to them voraciously all through
high school. Actually, whenever I listen to "Black Sea" and "English
Settlement" I think of all those things that happened to me at that
time in my life. (In the last digest posters were talking about XTC
reminding them of that too). Along with Echo and the Bunnymen, XTC
really got me started listening to a whole new style of music. I used
to only listen to Queen and Aerosmith. Now I am a die-hard XTC fan.
I was actually fortunate to have seen Andy Partridge once in
my life, although I didn't get to meet him or see him perform. When
the boys did their radio tour for "Oranges and Lemons" I stood outside
WBCN studios in Boston. It was exciting to see him, if only for a
fleeting moment. Too bad I missed them when they DID tour; they came to
Boston on a few occasions. Hey, who knew at the time that they would
never tour again?
Oh well, enough of my drivel. Quite simply, thanks for existing
=) !!!!

This is the reason why I love O&L so much. No matter how many times you hear it, there is always one more layer, one more little instrument or nuance to be found. I have found that using my surround system, I can isolate one part of a song (Such as the Harmonized guitar in "Garden") and listen to just that instrument out of the surround speakers. By changing the delay time, I switch instruments. I'm not quite sure why it works, but it does. Someone mentioned Frank Sinatra doing "Man who Sailed.." I think Harry Connick Jr. would do a better job, who by the way has a new album out and it is completely different from the big band/piano albums of the past.
