andy - lead vocal, acoustic and amplified acoustic guitars, anklung.
    colin - fretless bass.
    dave - nylon-strung spanish guitar

  2. Live version.
Recorded live on The Old Grey Whistle Test, for BBC TV, in January 1982.
Recorded at BBC Television Studios, London.
First broadcast on 11 February 1982.
    Presenter: Anne Nightingale.
    Engineered by John Caulfield.
Released on 25 March 2002 on Coat of Many Cupboards in the U.K.
Colin Moulding - Bass and Vocals
Andy Partridge - Guitar, Keyboard and Vocals
Dave Gregory - Guitar, Keyboards and Vocals
    Terry Chambers - Drums

Andy: “With Settlement finished it was time to climb, very reluctantly, back on to the live treadmill. Thirteen years of valium addiction had been kicked and I was thinking clearer and deeper about life. I didn't want to be the packhorse on someone else's money making touring treadmill, I wanted to be a backroom boy record maker. No fame, just fine art.

“I didn't know how to stop the bus, so I picked up my acoustic guitar (help, where is all the noise to hide behind?), and we did a whistle test. Dave thought he played awfully on this show, but I think his nerves held out. Any microscopic faltering is soon made good. This is the only time we ever played this song live. To be truthful, I don't think we could be arsed with miking up Spanish guitars, so that sealed its fate.

“Oddly aquatic thematic footnote: just as we started, Colin kicked over a pint of water and spent the rest of the song paddling from puddle to puddle. Messing about on the river never sounded so real.”

we, we will dance like tiny boats with cotton sails upon the tops of the
seas, made of people stained with scorn who never see the
light of real love. no need to look back through diaries of lost

storm as if we're wheeling sea-birds. oh, in our yacht dance
oh, in our yacht dance. and how they'll be jealous of both of
us! in our yacht dance.

I enjoyed your tab on chalkhills. I have to look over my own version of
this, but I noted one discrepancy between your version (obtained,
apparently with video support?), and wanted your opinion on it...

I have the main riff starting on the third string, and not the fourth.
To me, it sounded as though these strings were being used.

Let me know what ya think, and if video showed you any new tricks...
Is this the best song on earth, or what?!?

Your version was:

******The Hook**********
= (slide)
E-------------------------------------------------------------8-10-|
B--------------------------------------------------------8-10------|
G-------11-12-11------------------------------------7=9------------|
D--12-14--------14-12-----------------------10---10----------------|
A---------------------12=10---10-10-8-10=12------------------------|
E------------------------------------------------------------------|
   + . . + . . + . . + . .

E------------------------------------------------------------------|
B--------------------------------------------------------8---------|
G-------11-12-11------------------------------------7=9------------|
D--12-14--------14-12-----------------------10---10----------------|
A---------------------12=10---10-10-8-10=12------------------------|
E------------------------------------------------------------------|
   + . . + . . + . . + . .

My version would look like:
******The Hook**********
= (slide)
E-------------------------------------------------------------8-10-|
B--------7--8--7-----------------------------------------8-10------|
G---7--9---------9--7------------------------5--5-5-7=9------------|
D----------------------7==5----5--5-3--5==7------------------------|
A------------------------------------------------------------------|
E------------------------------------------------------------------|
   + . . + . . + . . + . .

E------------------------------------------------------------------|
B--------------------------------------------------------8---------|
G---7--9---------9--7------------------------5--5-5-7=9------------|
D----------------------7==5----5--5-3--5==7------------------------|
A------------------------------------------------------------------|
E------------------------------------------------------------------|
   + . . + . . + . . + . .

I *think* my way is right (the string sounds seem to match the higher
strings, and my wrap-around between the 2 passes leaves you in the
correct position), but I'd be keen to hear if your video clearly shows
your way as being right.

Let me know --> have fun and play on!

TABlature for "Yacht Dance"

It's incomplete, I know, but I figured I should get what I have out there
for folks to peruse...Note: I sent a version of this to a couple of people
already, note that the "hook" is fingered differently, I think it's easier
this way, sorry!

I know the bridge is out (no pun intended) but I'll tack it on
sometime;this stuff is tricky to figure out. I have footage of the guys
doing this on the The Grey Whistle Test; there's some more things Dave and
Andy are doing although I'm not sure what. If I didn't have such a cheap
VCR, I could feed the video into my mac and make little Quicktime movies to
analyze further. Maybe sometime down the road, perhaps. Enjoy! Comments
encouraged!
