Hi,

I'd also like to wholeheartedly rave about the tribute shows that
were done by The Loser's Lounge troupe over the last week. I saw
three of them. They were that good.

Hardly any details were overlooked, and as mentioned before,
that included some guy jumping up on stage at the end of "My Love Explodes"
to complain in a Woody Allen-esque voice just like on the record.

That guy was me.

No, it was not an abomination. ;-)

Wayne invites us to populate a new thread.

Straight to the meat, er, that is to say, no beating about the bush (or
prevarication). In fact, to avoid getting long-winded (I don't know
about you, but I can't stand those posts that wallow in
self-aggrandising, pompous, prolix verbosity - and, yet, contain the
germ of a nascent quantum leap in the [hyperbolic] future
zeitgeist...which, of course, is cruelly ignored, in favour of
superficial doggerel, - I won't name names here), and unnecessarily
devious, here, without further ado (apart from the grammatically
emphatic colon) is my contribution (with a big apology for the UK
slant), a brief extract from a list of thousands:

Soft Machine - nothing post "Volume Two"
Kid Loco - nothing post "A Grand Love Story"
Little Feat - nothing post "Sailin' Shoes"
Stevie Wonder - after "Talkin' Book " is pure Gak
Psychedelic Furs - "Talk Talk Talk" they then "went American"
(apologies, America)
Black Sabbath - just own "Black Sabbath"
Bowie - bag'o'shite after "Station to Station"
Hendrix - "Axis: Bold As Love" (plus a few later bits...)
The Orb - "U.F. Orb" - cack ensued
Parliament - "Mothership Connection" period
Joy Division - New Who ?
Clapton - the best (ahem) spanker of a plank, up to "Wheels of Fire".
Narcotics (and narcolepsy) did for him aftterwards
Prince - up to "Sign 'O' The TImes" (OK, the odd ripper afterwards)
Ian Dury - "New Boots & Panties" the zenith
Zappa - "Hot Rats" (a few nice, twiddly bits with the gtr., for afters)
Stones - "Let It Bleed" - total arsewipe segue on *their* career
Kinobe - "Soundphiles" - Great; "VERSEBRIDGECHORUS"" - Wank

You get my drift - lots of cracking ideas to begin with; diarreah
follows (let's raise a glass of bubbly, and snort a quickie, to the joys
of nouveau riche'dom). Some sustain it longer than others - Andy & Colin
should tour as "The Viagras" - but they mostly fade after a fairly short
time. It's the old "pop is, and always will be, ephemeral" diatribe. And
I like it.
Therefore Wayne, it's axiomatic - most bands are on the decline shortly
after they first let a TV make-up artist near / sign a 5 album deal /
hire a choreographer / swap denim for spandex / overdose...

And, all irony aside, re:

Shit. I'd assumed this was a joke. Apparently it's true which is one
of the most horrific and odious bits of information I've had to
inwardly digest for some time. Please, somebody, anybody...make them
stop!!! And comparing Level 42 to XTC, on any COUGH level, is quite
possibly the most ridiculous thing I've ever read on Chalkhills...and
that's saying something, "Millichip" fans!

Fact: Level 42 sucked poop from a badger's arse. They will inevitably

Reasonably fair comment, but from someone who listenes to BLEURGH?????

Dom may find Level 42 odious, but nothing could be so truly horrific as
Damian All-Bran and his suckling dwarves' inane, pointless, septic and
unfeeling garbage. I know Andy liked them once, but Jeez! How plastic and
peurile do you want it?

At least Level 42 produced the brilliant 'Hot Water'. That constantly
reinventing-himself pseudo-cockney twat has never and will never come up
with as good a record.

Blur suck ass big time. The Demon Albarn is a talentless waste of space -
Gorillaz anyone?

Hillers of Chalk,

The embarrassing albums thread has led me to another idea. One that
might even benefit some of us. What are your favorite albums that you
can't find on CD? Maybe you thought it was unavailable and someone else
on the list knows better! Or has a copy they would be willing to
sell/trade. To get started, here are some of mine:

Shaun Cassidy - Wasp; (produced by Todd R. and featuring TR&Utopia as
band).

Hall & Oates - War Babies; (same as above, ex. earlier Utopia members).

Urgh! A Music War; I have the video, and the LP, but not the CD.

Sweet - Strung Up; Live. I had the LP, but stupidly sold it at a record
show, not knowing it wouldn't be released on CD. (One funny thing, the
brown&silver "Hersheys" CD features the Strung Up version of "Need A Lot
Of Lovin'" instead of the original studio version, so the rest should be
somewhere)

FM - City of Fear; Obscure, but I like it.

801 Live; Available, I think, but I haven't found it yet. Where should I
look?

Bill Nelson - The Two-Fold Aspect of Everything; B-sides mostly. I have
the tape and have seen the CD, but I want it for mine.

Those are the top ones I can think of right now. How about you?

Yaateeh, friends:

I'm sending this e-mail from a slow-as-hell WebTV device at the Hotel
Santa Fe in New Mexico. On my way back from the Institute of American
Indian Arts Museum downtown (I've been on a week-long trip with the
American Indian College Fund), I stopped at a Border's to buy "Welcome
Interstate Managers," the new album from Fountains of Wayne. I cannot
recommend this enough -- it's easily the best album I've heard this
year. Please go buy it NOW to support Mr. Schlesinger & Co. (who are
now on a Virgin Records imprint?!?). Doing so will make your life

Izzat a fact now? No, it sounds like YOUR OPINION.

And don't get me started on how I don't appreciate heavy metal either,
because I like both soft AND hard music. It just so happens that Level 42 is
categorized as 'soft', so what?

If you don't have anything nice to say about a band, then go ahead and say
bad things, but your criticism is not in the least bit constructive so it
isn't even worth reading. It's as if I told you your brain was being

Hello again

Look, I just want to thank wesLONG. You have done so much to entertain and
edify us all, it's great, and muchly appreciated, with your site,
www.optimismsflames.com

The extremely exciting news you just provided those of us on your mailing
list is almost too much to bear. I'll leave that for Wes to announce as he
sees fit, but believe me, what fantastic news it was!

Well, Wes, it's a very pretty site, I told you that before. But man, it's
so hard for a luddite (Andy's words about the Net) like me to navigate. Can
I make a respectful suggestion please? Can you provide a really dead simple
dropdown menu, without any fancy bullshit, just so we can go straight to
what we want? It's so hard to find things. Sorry, but it's true. At least
for me. Does anyone else find the same problem? Otherwise, brilliant site,
and excellent work you have done. Obviously a "labour-of-love".
Congratulations Wes!

I will be seeing Terry Chambers soon - well, he's gonna be my guest, as I
told you before. And he's agreed for me to bail him up for an informal
interview (*very* informal, I should imagine). So, in the spirit of Wes'
plea for questions for Colin, have any of you got stuff you wanna ask TC?
If so, please send 'em thru. Please make them as funny, wild and ribald as
you want. He's a drummer, after all, ha ha!

I intend to cull all this to present to either/both Relphie's and Longie's
sites. We'll see. Who knows, it might just degenerate into a fierce
piss-fest (as it has before) and come to nought. But here's hoping. BTW,
Terry is supremely happy and well, and has expressed a rather tantalisingly
sincere desire to climb aboard the kit again. Would that it were so...

That's enuff. Sgt Rock is gonna help me (if no-one else will)

This exchange comes from a friend who thought it might be of interest to
some of you at least. I leave in the reply I made, because it was always
considered outrageous how they got away with it with the "Captain Pugwash"
cartoon series. Forget "Noddy felt a little queer", this thing was seminal
(oops) in its blatant attempts to push the censorial envelope. I feel
certain Andy would approve, and most likely would have been a fan in his
youth?

Description of band Pugwash sounds nifty though, dontcha think?

Website details for copping Pugwash's CD is given in the body of this

Hey Jonathan

Very kind of you to share that with me. What a tantalising brew this
person describes when referring to Pugwash. Do you mind if I send this
through to Chalkhills, the XTC discussion list? There are a number of The
Church fans on there too...

Pugwash, eh? Presumably derived from that dinky old cartoon that featured
the unforgettable seafaring characters, Master Bates and Seaman Staines, ha
ha!

Are you getting toey for the new BHS? I sure am!

The new CD featuring Canberra musicians, including really early Steve
Kilbey stuff (Baby Grand) is almost ready, I'm told. I'll keep you posted
on developments.

 - Anybody else notice that the spine label of FW 1 & 2 is upside down when
you put it on the cd rack (the cover right-side up and on the right-hand
side)? Not sure if this is a British and/or European thing or not but I've
noticed that the books in my library that come from Europe have their spines
printed the other way from the North American printed books.

- Is there any rhyme or reason behind how Andy's ordering the tracks on FW?
Obviously, it's not chronological. Is there some hidden theme for each cd?

Chalksters -

Spoke with Colin on the 16th and found him editing a
DVD of the Virgin era XTC. The two disc set will
feature all of the Virgin promo vids, everything on
Look Look and beyond, through Nonsuch. Not to mention
live footage from Australia, Holland and more -
depending on what minty-fresh schtuff they uncover.
Oh, yeah - there will also be video of the lads in the
studio working on tunes from the last few releases.
According to Mr. Moulding - there will probably be
future DVDs as well. (What's the over/under on copies
of the Look Look vid hitting Ebay over the next few
months?)

I'll have the full interview transcribed soon - will
post a link to it here, will have it open outside of
Optimism's Flames so you can all check it out.

What else do we chat about? Hmmm - The Dukes, Robert
Fripp, farts (yes, farts), beer, the remastered discs,
songwriting, Ebay, relationships... stay tuned.

Another equinox, another gig.

Many sweaty thanks to all those of you who made gig #3 worth the effort. A
very near sell-out in the famous Dublin Castle.

Great to see so many familiar faces and to see so many new ones.

Once again we enjoyed ourselves and deafened the audience. We even had what
passes as a thirty-somethings attempt at stage diving!

After much debate, we finally tried a couple of new songs, Funk and
Lighthouse went well and the Disappointed made probably it's first an last
appearance.

It was also a pleasure to see our old bass player Crawford who came to see
us for the first time.

For those who weren't there the menu was...

Radios In Motion
Life Begins at the Hop
This is Pop
The Disappointed
Funk Pop a Roll
Optimisms Flames
Little Lighthouse
Atom Age

Seagulls Screaming

Mayor of Simpleton
Towers of London

Respectable Street
Generals and Majors

And what do you know

we announced our next gig- a return to Sindon at the request of the (we are
promised) larger venue of The Victoria- actually in Swindon, close to the
Station. The date as near an anniversary of our first gig- Saturday 20th
September, and hey if we can keep going we could all wish Dave Gregory a
