I haven't bought 3 of his last 4 albums, but after seeing that performance, I think I'll be picking up "Painted from Memory." Great material, and his voice has never sounded better. Spin one of his discs -- especially this new accoustic/orchestral experiment, and prepare yourself for some heady vertigo. Two decades on, Partridge's voice is still lovably loopy and acrobatic, his hooks still astoundingly oblique and original. Many people have been woried about Apple vol 2 without dave. There is a new Music web site here named Puls,(This used to be Norway's bigest music paper) so i thought i'd write them a little note on what's happening with XTC. I got a mail back from the designer of the page telling me: Sorry, wrong mail address Here is the right one but I enjoyed your mail greatly. He was a HUGE fan and didn't know what they were doing these days. I'm really surprised how many people actually like XTC but have more or less forgotten them(7years, sighh). Now! go out there and spread the news,they need all the sales they can get.(PS! Got to the right people at last and they promised to write about it) Also there was a huge realise list in every big papers here last wheek. One paper said that "Apple Venus" is due in Jan, one said Feb. and the third said Mars,(Does nobody know for sure?) but the bigest paper over here completly forgot the whole album and got a flaming note from yours truely. They even wrote back and promised a big article on the band shortly.(Sometimes anger helps) On another note, has anybody been to "morning becomes eclectic,kcrw" on http://www.liveconcerts.com/ it would be a great place to hear XTC, each show last about 1 - 1 1/2 hour including live accustic and talking with the bands. They changed members and kept the same name like no one will notice. It is a different band; their sound has changed completely. Keyboardist Barry Andrews was swapped for Guitarist Dave Gregory. Now: the sound of clashing changs and chongs, more tones and textures from the guitars... Now we have an album full of songs founded with extraordinary vision and sculpted with musical expertise. The nuances lurking inside are countless. This band plays with more force although notably slower and more controlled than the previous band. Their barbed wit is still intact and so is their sharp sense of the edge. The edge of accessibility, the edge of the scalpel which peruses the brain once the needle is dropped, the edge of the groove which is characteristically jagged. Mr. Partridge has now created a significant external other which lives and breathes whenever someone spins an XTC record - this 'other' consumes each song [you can hear him clawing and crunching away as the song plays] - and this makes it all sort of scary... This is without question the greatest album of the decade. ********** 10 stars out of 5

Cool word, sphagnum.
My take on the Daveless Effect:
Mid 80s, DG was my favorite cog in the triangular xtc wheel. There
will be a difference without him.
I'm not as concerned with the fate of the sound as some seem to be.
One of the many perceptions that I have developed regarding AP over
the years is that he is much like a child in his ability to sponge up
info, style, what have you. Having listened to the Apple Venus Demos
(hey, we have a name for those wonderful collections of tunes now!) I
come away with the overwhelming impression that AP has absorbed
shitloads of Dave during the past 20 years, in his arranging as well
as guitar work.
Not to say that Andy's style is anybody's but his own. His recent
guitar work with Yazbek (as well as on the above mentioned demos) is
chalk full of Davish twiddlys, but with a distinct Partridgeon skew.
Remember folks, we've been spoiled rotten since '79 by having two of
the greatest guitarists and one of the best four-stringers of this
particular epoch of PoP. Two of those three also happen to be several
of Earth's radii above the field when it comes to writing songs. This
is why the xtc music factory HAS NO PEER (usual acronyms apply).
I don't doubt that we'll hear plenty from Dave Gregory. I've heard
rumor that he's putting together a band that will record nothing but
segue music for conservative radio talk shows. I believe one of the
band names being bandied about is the Amandatones. ;)

Fellow Chalkhillians,
Whilst countless albums have been near-mutilated through the
ubiquitous CD medium, it's not necessarily the format that's inferior
in itself. When you consider that the music's been fragmented into a
bunch of zeros and ones, the compact disc does manage to compete quite
well with the beloved "liquorice pizza". And it's an ideal format for
more precision-oriented music, e.g classical.
However, whilst (at least in my opinion) CD and vinyl are
approximately equal in quality, they markedly differ in
characteristics - either has a different "personality", you could say.
And vinyl has a personality that no digital medium could _ever_ hope
to replicate.
Maybe it's just psychological, knowing that a squiggly spiral cut
in a piece of PVC can sound so _good_, but there is something about LP
records which is undeniably intriguing.
Another thing which needs to be said is it's a crying shame that
the masses swallowed the hype promising "pure, perfect sound, forever"
- when what we've been given instead is sorely-compromised editions of
classic albums, so riddled with defects in sound (and packaging) that
they are not much more than leagalized pirate copies (at least the
performers do get royalties...). And meanwhile, the analogue format
gets relegated to niche status, dismissed as the reserve of nostalgia
buffs!
Anyway, to conclude this matter, let me say that albums from the
vinyl era are best left on "black gold".

Kat Nagel (KatNagel@eznet.net) sent this terrific piece to the EARLY-M
mailing list in December 1994. It is the best description of the social
development of a mailing list I've read.
Every list seems to go through the same cycle:
1.Initial enthusiasm (people introduce themselves, and gush a lot about how
wonderful it is to find kindred souls).
2.Evangelism (people moan about how few folks are posting to the list, and
brainstorm recruitment strategies).
3.Growth (more and more people join, more and more lengthy threads develop,
occasional off-topic threads pop up).
4.Community (lots of threads, some more relevant than others; lots of
information and advice is exchanged; experts help other experts as well as
less experienced colleagues; friendships develop; people tease each other;
newcomers are welcomed with generosity and patience; everyone -- newbie
and expert alike -- feels comfortable asking questions, suggesting
answers, and sharing opinions).
5.Discomfort with diversity (the number of messages increases dramatically;
not every thread is fascinating to every reader; people start complaining
about the signal-to-noise ratio; person 1 threatens to quit if *other*
people don't limit discussion to person 1's pet topic; person 2 agrees
with person 1; person 3 tells 1 & 2 to lighten up; more bandwidth is
wasted complaining about off-topic threads than is used for the threads
themselves; everyone gets annoyed).
6.Finally:
1.Smug complacency and stagnation
(the purists flame everyone who asks an 'old' question or responds with
humor to a serious post; newbies are rebuffed; traffic drops to a
doze-producing level of a few minor issues; all interesting discussions
happen by private email and are limited to a few participants; the
purists spend lots of time self-righteously congratulating each other on
keeping off-topic threads off the list).
OR
2.Maturity
(a few people quit in a huff; the rest of the participants stay near
stage 4, with stage 5 popping up briefly every few weeks; many people
wear out their second or third 'delete' key, but the list lives
contentedly ever after).

Well, what I wanted to write was:
"Hey there, sampled a Dukes of Stratosphere bit (from "Jackie", the
sound I decoded in a digest a few weeks past) in a track called "You
Know What Good Is" I made which is TOTALLY BRILLIANT so you better go
to my homepage at www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/9259 and listen to it
and see if you find the Dukes bit !"
But, shame on me, I'm not the ultimate computer wiz kid, so I don't
know how to get the track converted to a .wav file. I have it on an
Audio CD and it's there as a .cda file, which is okay for the WinAmp
player, but not for the Geocities Upload Program. Or should I bring
it into MP3 format, to be up to date ? How do I do that ? Any help is
welcome and will be rewarded with the wav file sent personally to
him, so you don't have to wait hours watching the Geocities server
break down (he likes doing that !).
Please, I need your help.

One word to Apple Venus:
How come a label called Cooking Vinyl doesn't release an album which
is supposedly of such an aural complexity on vinyl ?
I mean, it's not for the money, is it ? IMHO, I know bands who don't
even have a proper label and they release their stuff on vinyl, and
not on CD's.
You know, I'm not one of these Hi Enders, and different to
Robert Wood in digest 5-56 I do not find listening to CD's a "pretty
grim experience", I mean, that depends more on the music that is
played, and on the production conditions. So, I do find musical
satisfaction in listening to CD's, and I'm not using them only as
background while doing the washing up, although doing the washing up
without music is rather boring and doing it with the latest Refused
album on at high volume is a pretty cool thing to do.
But I wanted Apple Venus on CD and on Vinyl, not because I'm an
excessive XTC collector, but as I like Vinyl, the big sleeves, the
smell, the possibility of working with it while DJing, which you can
do with CD's but it's simply not as good.
But, then, maybe it becomes a No. 1 album and is re-released on vinyl
later. (Yeah boy, dream on !)
Still, happy XTC found new label, although they should change their
name to Cooking Silicium.

To cut a long story short, friend of mine called at Andy Partridges house and came away with an advance copy of Apple Venus (no sleeve notes, just the running order). Noel then promptly gave me a copy. I must say that on first listen I was slightly disappointed, perhaps because I have been used to hearing some of the songs on demo and have got used to the slightly 'warm' quality. Highlights though are a stunning Dictionary, Green Man ,I'd like that (Some naff lyrics but very Skylarking) and best of all If I cant own her. This particular track has haunted me ever since the first play and shows off Andy's Wiltshire drawl at its best a la Wrapped in grey. I am quite pleased to feel a little disappointed at the remaining tracks as I will have to work at these and in the past I usually end up liking these tracks more than the instantly likeable ones. This posting is not intended to come across as being smug, but where else could I share my excitement ! Also I am changing jobs in 2 weeks and will not have access to e mail and chalkhills when Apple Venus is finally released, so I will miss all the reaction to it. Keep up the good work of communicating with each other and I look forward to re subscribing to chalkhills when I get one of these machines at home when I can talk about the impending release of Apple Venus 3 Steve Franklin, Bristol.

Anyway, I was making a comparison between the stuff that people seem to want to remember and celebrate (i.e. Duran, Spandau bleedin' Ballet, Kajapoopoo etc) and the stuff that was equally as popular at the time (IN THIS COUNTRY!!!), but which everyone has conveniently forgotten (XTC, Smiths, Bunnymen, Jam etc). I put this down to the hideous world of "post-modernity" where only really crap things are considered good in retrospect because it's, duh, kinda ironic'n'that. Is it shite. Crap is crap and the pong might fade, but you still wouldn't want it on your toast. But yes, squire, your point would have been an excellent one otherwise. It is a very small world. Last night I was chatting to a guy called Jason (a friend of "the guy upstairs") who hails from Swindon (accent very much intact and scarily reminiscent of our boys) and he spotted my copy of White Music (which I was using as a mouse mat - yes, I know, sacrilege!). He mentioned that his dad used to play in a band with someone from XTC - Stadium Dogs or something similar - and that he was pals with most of the band. Jesus H Osbourne! Of course, this might be cobblers, but if anyone is aware of the name Cousins in relation to the early years of XTC, then please enlighten me, sharpish! It definitely rings a bell, but then I might just be thinking of that ice-skating bloke (Robin Cousins? Hmmmm, not really my sport...). Here's hoping Tyson gets his face punched off. I think I last posted to this esteemed list exactly a year ago, to say
how great a year 1998 was going to be in terms of new music - new XTC
albums, etc. WELL, as it turned out, I got a new Liz Phair, and maybe
a couple other things I was sort-of dying for, but now its 1999 and
I'm still waiting for a lot of things to come out -- Peter Gabriel,
where are ye?
Does anybody else miss the day when musicians put out an album or more
a year? White Music and Go2 both came out in 1978 and no one thought
twice when D&W followed them up on their heels in 1979.
I can't think of another industry that seems to want to put out _less
and less_ product every year. In the classical music scene, the
situation is dire.
However, I will stake my confidence in 1999 on the basis of just two
releases - Apple Venus in February, and Blur's "13" in March. That's
all I need to hold me over for a while. Something tells me that AV2
won't show up until 2000, despite everyone's best intentions, but I
have Hope. And Bo, if you want her back, it'll cost ya.

There are actually at least two Italian books about XTC.
But judging from your description you have seen the one called
"XTC: Testi Con Traduzione A Fronte" which i think means something
like "text and translation". Anyway, the larger part of this book has
a number of XTC lyrics and their translations into Italian, but
certainly not all of their songs.
The ISBN number for this book is 88-85859-87-9 and it was published
in 1992 by Arcada Editrice in Milano, Italy.
I ordered my copy just a couple of years ago so i think it is still
"in print". Any bookstore can get it for you if you give them the
ISBN number. Good luck!
Anyway, it's quite funny to see those familiar XTC songtitles in
Italian. Can you guess these? Uomini Spaventapasseri, Il Sindaco Di
Sempliciopoli and Gabbiani Gridano Baciala, Baciala!

No, the original "official" production run comes on a grey plastic
cassette with tracklisting and copyright notice in black lettering.
It's a ferro tape with Dolby noise reduction. Also marked "LE-01 Made
in Canada"... If you want i can send you a JPG image of the
original item, email me privately
BTW: the other two fanclub tapes, Bull W.T.G.G. and Window Box, also
come on "custom" tapes and _not_ standard cassettes. Buyer beware...

Forget about the demos, the real thing will blow your mind.
Faves so far: River Of Orchids (what an opener!), Harvest Festival,
The Last Balloon, Colin's Frivolous Tonight (the obvious single IMHO)
and Fruit Nut. But the real piece de la resistance is Greenman,
formerly known as The Green Man. So bloody beautiful it almost made
me cry
