Definitely not in print. It's pretty good, but the best XTC videos
have not been released for consumption by the general public.
Especially videos like "Grass", "Human Alchemy", "Mole From The
Ministry", and basically anything since _Look Look_. Except "Dear
God" which is available on some compilation videos, I believe.

The Little Express is the North American Fan Club. Isn't that good enough?

Chalkhills is American. What exactly are you thinking to have on this
proposed web page?

Of course we should. Otherwise we're just lying to each other.

There has been at least one XTC convention in the U.S., in Illinois I
believe. There was also a convention in Barrie, Ontario, not far from
Toronto, and a number of Americans attended that convention as well.
Then again, a number of Americans have attended the various
conventions in the U.K. (including myself).

I'd to thank my man Jason Garcia (a fellow Texan) and well
as at least one another Chalkhiller for propping me up regard-
ing my CC 97 cover of Traffic Light Rock, which I did...not
seriously. Here's a fuller version of my "notes."

August 7-9

I had been putting together the drum tracks on a thing called
"HammerHead" (shareware for incipient techo-DJs..strangely enough,
all share/freeware of this type seems to be based in Scandavia)
over a couple of days, cutting and pasting measure by measure.
Eventually, I got a passable drum track with the most vanilla
samples I could find. The plan for my cover is: uncover Motorhead
as a secret XTC influence.

August 10

6:45pm Make coffee.
7pm Fiddled with drum track, trying to transfer it to tape via
patch cable. No luck. I play the track through my PC speakers
and stick the microphone (Radio Shack _Universal Dynamic Some-
thing_) at them while the tape rolls. (A vintage 1990 4-track.)
8pm Do bass track my sticking said microphone at my 2X15 Peavey
cabinet (relic from 1970s), playing Yamaha bass.
8:10pm I realize I can't hear out of the left ear of my headphones,
so I twist some pots all the way over to the left side so I can
hear myself through the monitor. (Note: this detail will become
  very important later on.) Coffee.
8:30pm Try to set up my electric guitar (a Telecaster). I haven't
played it in a few months, so I go hunting for my distorto-box
and found the battery had leaked so as to make it unusable for
  the night's session. I patch it line-in raw, but I don't like
the sound, so I wave the mic at it instead for that ambient
vibe. My 30-watt amp's still not satisfying me, so I use the
little Dean Markley 12 watt practice amp I've had since I was
a kid. An unvarnished Tele + undistorted amp = country music,
so I then decide it's gonna be a cowbilly-style cover.
9-12pm Try like hell getting guitar tracks done. Coffee. Something's
  not right. Coffee.
12:05pm Bed.

August 11

8-8:58pm Erase previous day's work, save drum track.
8:59pm Coffee.
9pm-9:58pm Rebuild instrumental tracks one by one.
9:59pm Coffee. Spiked with cinnamon.
10pm -10:58pm Vocals. Read actual lyrics for probably the first
time.Practice doing Texas-style drawl, which I steeled myself
against having, being born here and all.
10:59pm Coffee. Spiked with gin.
11pm - 12pm Dinking around with guitar fills on the second track.
  Punch in, punch out.
12pm "Mixdown." Remember those pots I twisted in such a devil-may-
care fashion yesterday? Well, what they did was specify WHICH
CHANNEL EACH TRACK RECORDED ON. YES, MY WHOLE TRACK WAS ON THE
LEFT SIDE, AND THE RIGHT NOTHING BUT WHISTLING SILENCE. Stunned,
I sit back in my chair...
12pm - 12:10pm Gin.
12:10pm - 12:30pm Mull options...lessee, stab myself with 1/4"
adapter, call Richard Pedretti-Allen at this very instant gargling
the _Liebestod_ from _Tristan und Isolde_...
12:30pm - 1:00pm Quake deathmatch, while listening to Iggy and the
  Stooges' remixed _Raw Power_.
1:00pm The solution: Play 4-track tape through some little speakers,
pointed at the by-now overused microphone, run through a boom box.
1:02pm Mixdown complete.

"Luck" indeed.

Great! Discussion's well and good, but I don't imagine
folks who've bought the Rolling Stones tour jacket or pre-
signed for "Spiceworld" on video (out next week) anguishing
like we (collectively) have about trifles like "fan's
charity" v. "band's obligation". At some point it's all
angels-on-pinheads and I just want to put my money where
my mouth is, as I'm sure others do. (Not that I claim to
speak for all.)

Re the Grammys: Can't XTC get nominated next year? I mean,
how hard can it be? Puffy Combs? LeeAnn-"I've-got-talent-but-
my-manager-will-do-for-my-career-what-Col.-Parker-did-for-
Elvis"-Rimes? And what is that pesky "minimum number"?

>football match, I smosh somebodies fice in.' I bet Swindonians

Given Arsenal's and Swindon Town's respective play lately, that's
probably a lot of lager, and Bank's Bitter or Marston's Pedigree.
Seems they'd be drinking for entirely different reasons, though.

Greeting, fellow chalkheads

This past Saturday night, I purchased English Settlement., and I love
it!!!! I have such a hard time getting the songs out of my head (but
what's wrong with that? :) )

It seems so hard to describe the sound. The songs are so addictive that
it's hard to decide which song to start with when I put it in my player.

What songs DOES dear ol' Smileypants like? Well, I'll tell ya!!
I just happen to be addicted to "Runaways", "Senses Working Overtime",
"No Thugs In Our House", "Melt the Guns", "Fly on the Wall". This album
just rocks. Enough said.

Next on the list :
NONSUCH
BLACK SEA
O&L
MUMMER
BIG EXPRESS

Ol' Smiley's collection is almost complete!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Well, that's it for now. Have a good one, fellow chalkheads :)

I'm sad to announce that #Buzzcity (our XTC chat room on
irc.alternatech.net) is, at least for the time being, defunct. About two
months ago we upgraded our Internet Server, and at that point our IRC server
software stopped working. We'll probably replace it, but maybe not -
#Buzzcity was the only permanent channel we had, and after the initial
novelty wore off, usage pretty much dropped to zero. I blame myself though,
for not setting up regularly-scheduled listening parties and hosted
sessions.

Still, I guess it was nice to have the channel on a mostly-unused chat
server, because it nearly eliminated interference from trollers, pedophiles,
and "XTC? - you mean the drug?" types. I, for one, had some wonderful chats
with some very nice people. Maybe by the time the new album comes out, we'll
have it back up and running again...

As for other projects, I'm currently trying to create a dead-accurate vector
graphic file of the "Oranges & Lemons" album cover. It seems that
bitmap-tracing programs such as Adobe Streamline and CorelTrace are pretty
much useless for the kind of accuracy and fully-layered editability I'm
trying to achieve here - the idea being that the results would be used to
create animated GIF's and a screen saver, as well as the usual T-shirt
iron-ons and such. But I haven't got a lot of time on my hands these days.
If anyone wants to help with it, e-mail me (jh3@netins.net) - it would
entail reproducing each object in a given section of the drawing manually,
in a vector illustration program, using the most efficient number of path
nodes possible. Also filling in objects that are obscured by other parts of
the drawing. (I've got the background and most of Andy finished already,
along with about 75% of Dave's guitar.)

Finally, I wanted to congratulate everyone involved in the CC97 project for
doing such a great job! The results are much more polished-sounding than the
first tape, though I have to admit that Marshall Armintor's rather
polish-free version of "Traffic Light Rock" is probably my favorite thing on
it. If you don't have it, get it! GET IT NOW!

Chalkers,

In the last issue, Smiley gave me a great idea. Why don't I list my
favorite songs from XTC? Here's my Top Ten.

1.	Grass (Skylarking)
2.	Jump (Mummer)
3.	All of You Pretty Girls (The Big Express)
4.	Dear God (Skylarking)
5.	Humble Daisy (Nonsuch)
6.	Chalkhills and Children (Oranges and Lemons)
7.	Snowman (English Settlement)
8.	Wake Up (The Big Express)
9.	Mayor of Simpleton (Oranges and Lemons)
10.	Then She Appears (Nonsuch)

Just recently I had a death in my family, and I started playing The Big
Express and Mummer, and their music made me feel better. Those albums are
so great, and the music is uplifting to me at least. If I could meet the
guys I would thank them for having such great music. I don't know I would
have done if I didn't have those albums. Thank you Andy, Colin and Dave for
all of your music.

Molly

Hi all,

About 3-4 weeks ago, yours truly was pulling out of a parking garage
when lo & behold a familiar sequence of a letters in a most delightful
font grabbed the corner of my eye...

It was our favorite 3 letter pun in the English Settlement font. Given
the dingy lighting, it appeared either black or green with a white
background.

Perhaps, the owner of said vehicle is on this list? The garage is in
San Francisco. It so happens that the corporate headquarters of CNET is
in this same edifice. Also in the neighborhood are a number of SF's
premier multimedia development boutiques hence, the thought that such an
individual might be a Chalkhills subscriber.

Anyway, it certainly was a change of pace as opposed to:
I Break for Animals, SH*T Happens, etc.

Hey, Chalkers,

Go to http://babelfish.altavista.digital.com, and feed the cool search
engine some stuff. You'll get XTC lyrics (English --> French --> English)
like:

"...there can be no quilts of gold, but the rich person whom I will
release..."

"...how what you of the martians says 'I love you'?"

"...there is nothing in the world as a green-peeled girl
But that do not mean to indicate that you cannot look at it..."

Sometimes computers are useful, but they're mostly just an excuse for me not
to write papers. This is neat, though...Maybe Partridge could feed it a song
in English, translate it to German, fling it back into English, and record
*that*. Hmmmm. (I'm feeling anti-computer because I've given in, and am
using Internet Explorer. It's quicker than Netscape.)

I'm sorry this post is so late in coming, I'm usually a lurker. On
August 7, 1997, a local (the SF Bay Area in California, US of A) free
magazine called BAM featured an interview with Andy in which they
discussed such things as Dear God, Upsy Daisy, Testimonial Dinner, and
Xtc's future. If anyone failed to put this interview on the web, then
please email me and let me know, and I'll try to put it on the web and
send the link out through this mailing list. Also, I just got a Promo
only 12" vinyl that says on the cardboard sleeve, Live! Warner Bros.
Radio Show. It's Skylarking, with some guy interviewing Andy between
every couple songs, making comments on the meanings and recording of all
the songs. It's in excellent to mint condition, and has the original
packaging and letter from Geffen Records advertising Skylarking. I
looked through the discography on the Chalkhills site, and I couldn't
find any mention of a Warner Bros. Records Show record, though I did
find a reference to a record that is Skylarking with interview with
Andy, but with so many versions of so many records or CDs that perhaps
this isn't on the discography? Anyone have an estimated value on
this? - Shawn D. Stone.

How could you make an xTc movie WITHOUT xTc? It couldn't be half as
funny and twisted as "The Road to Oranges and Lemons". I'd much
rather the band take advantage of it's own sense of humour and
creativity to come up with something a bit more interesting than a
normal biopic. And who (other than us) is going to go and see a
film about an obscure cult band when Bruce (the horror! the horror!)
Willis can't even be guaranteed to put bums on cinema seats?

Why don't xTc pretend they're the Rutles and do an alternate
history of the band, and call in the Dukes to record *pastiches* of
their own songs from their different time periods? Then we get a
brand spanking new soundtrack full of some very weird spotty jerky
thumpy pastoral industrial retro cyclic shiny masturbatory criminally
ignored songs. I'll leave it to Mr Sherwood to provide the
tracklisting - i'm off to find my 3D Glasses.

Dear Chalkers,

Indeed.... this magnificent album sounds so fresh and exciting; as if
the (analog!) sound is jumping at you from the speakers. I've never
heard a better sounding vinyl album ever.
And that's also why we really need a re-issue of the early CD's
with decent re-mastering a la Fossil Fuel.

But while we are on the subject of English Settlement:
The Australian pressing of the double album was a limited
_numbered_ edition and 5000 copies were pressed.
My copy is number 1954 and I was wondering if anybody has #1 or
knows where it's at?

Well guys and gals, I just flunked my latest test on good ole Will. But enough
of that......

Steve-Lessee...as far as I know, the Dukes names' came about like this-\
Sir John Johns-Andy's father is named John, and Andy's middle name is John.
Lord Cornelius Plum (You don't know how close I came to typing "lady", I'm so
used to saying it!) Dave was going to name himself U.S. of Arthur. but the
name was already being used. I don't think it's certain how he landed on that
one.
EIEI Owen-Hum a few bars of "Ole Macdonald" to figure that one out.

Molly-I'm not sure if 120 Minutes is the best vehicle for you. If you want to
see XTC p[layed, it's better to write to M2, MTV's sister (and, IMNSHO, MUCH
better) station. They've played XTC vids several times before, and I have yet
to see one on 120 Minutes. I know M2 comes on usually at 1 in the afternoon
Central Time, I'm not sure what that would around the country....

Mitch-Was the stove hissing or was Dave??? Anyhoo, that Nazi guy whose face
melted would be PERFECT to play Andy. I'm gonna have to go watch Raiders of
the Lost Ark now! I'm not sure who we could get to play Colin, but Noah Wyle
could be a shoo-in for Dave.

Tis all for now,

I kind of doubt it as Andy sort of slammed Depeche Mode on MTV during his
guest vj stint.

I agree that there should be more XTC web sites, but having more sites
probably isn't going to increase the size of their fan base. For that you
need advertising, airplay, videos, etc. If people are just looking for
information about the band, there's enough out there right now. (Which isn't
to say there shouldn't be more.)

If you ask me, the main reason there aren't more XTC web sites is because
the band members themselves aren't active online. If there were a chance
that by building an XTC shrine on the web, you might get an e-mail or
(better yet) a handwritten note from Andy, Dave, or Colin thanking you for
the effort, I suspect there would be a whole lot more sites. I don't blame
them for that; it's just my opinion. (And it didn't stop *me*...)

That reminds me - Bob Estus' "Roundabout" site
(http://www.znet.com/~bobestus/index.htm) is TOTALLY AWESOME. If you haven't
checked it out yet, you really owe it to yourself!

Rooting through the used CD bins, found a copy of Martin Newell's, The
Greatest Living Englishman (c) 1993. Gave it a bit of a test listen and
figured that it was worth exploring for the price. I wouldn't buy it
without being able to hear it. I don't buy stuff JUST BECAUSE so-n-so
might be on it unless it comes highly recommended from a realiable
source (If there is one thing that I have learned from Robert Fripp, it
is that he doesn't have the best judgement in choosing his projects, not
that that would stop an unscrupulous record company from releasing the
product.)

Okay, Andy seems to have done a fair amount of things on this disc. In
many instances, the CD reminds me of Rubber Soul / Revolver era Beatles.
Andy was Producer, Engineer, did some guitar work, keyboards, string
arrangements and "very clever stuff on the computer." but this
particular issue (on Pipeline Records under license of Humbug Records)
has Andy's name in the same huge type as Martin Newell's. It says...

MARTIN NEWELL
featuring the new improved
ANDY PARTRIDGE

Having said that (which is essentially nothing at all), what was "new
and improved" about Andy in 1993?

Cheers, Richard

NO KIDDING. It's like comparing a plastic apple with a real one.
And you get lyrics, pics and the like with the vinyl, too. At
least MY CD doesn't have them...are the ES CDs still packaged
poorly?

This is my first post at chalkhills and i'm doing this to share with you a
great new discover.
It's a unknown band named Superunloader. Their latest album is named Goes
#2, i don't know
if there is a reference or some to do with XTC's GO2 but i liked it a lot
and knowing that many XTC's fans
like Radiohead too i'm sending you the address ( i think there is a
connection between these 3 groups but
i can't explain that with my poor english ).
So, go there listen and mail me if you agree...

A few thoughts from your now-reclusive friend (that would be me...):

First, I followed through on Adam Tyner's domain name research. www.xtc.com
does not currently seem to be in use; www.xtc.org is, unsurprisingly, a
porn site, while www.xtc.net is the "East Tennessee Network": a "family
owned association of newspapers, radio stations, specialty magazines, and
local Internet providers covering the East Tennessee Region." Hmmm.

Second: I really don't care whether it's a double album or not. For all I
care, they could release the album on a series of twenty 1-song 3" CDs. I
just want some music, dammit. I've been waiting for this album for a third
of my life. Actually, if releasing it in two parts like this will let us
get more songs, I am wholeheartedly for it. I'll certainly repeat what many
other have said: while I'm not going to throw money at the band, I'll
gladly pay full price for a disc of unreleased demos if that's what it
would take to get them enough cash to finish the album.

Subject: XTC snippets

Hello fellow XTC fanatics--how is everyone? I have been reading this venue for
about two months now, and this is my first posting (I am no longer a virgin).
Everyone remembers their first time, right? Back to reality..... I agree with
a few of the postings lately that this venue should be only for the
celebration, accomplishments, and talents of the fab 3. I ignore the
negativity and the occasional bickering that I read. I subscribed to this
because I love XTC, I appreciate their talents (when are they going to get the
respect they deserve? Hopefully this year), and I can never get enough of this
band. What a band they are--people that haven't listened to them are really
missing out on a great experience. That's what I tell friends anyway. (Trying
to sell records for the boys--the best thing we can do is try to influence
people to listen to them and buy their records, not take up a collection and
send them $$$$).
Couple of quick comments. First, is it possible to find copies of the
"look look" video anywhere? Or if someone has it, do they make copies for
members? Dying to see this sometime. Also I just talked to someone across the
pond who went to an XTC convention in England. He said there were about 50
people there. 50? It was disappointing to hear that only 50 people went to a
gathering in their own country. Too bad--no respect for the lads over there
either, it seems. Are there ever any gatherings in America? If I had the
resources, I'd consider doing it. I would love to go to an XTC convention over
here. Please, if there is one, someone let me know. Thanks.
Anyone with any answers please e-mail me. I appreciate it. E-mail me
anyway if you want. Looking to meet new people from all over. (Anyone in
Florida, though?) Until we meet again........ Fred Tucker (fptucker@aol.com)
