Had one of those "oooh, so near and yet so far" experiences today.

(background : I'm 30 & live in Dublin,Ireland so was a little to young to
go to see the boys when they played in Dublin)

Put on Fossil Fuel in the "office" (well, actually its a multimedia
production facility but who's counting...)
audio engineer/ex-musician #1 walks out and says : "ah ! yes ! (to the
strains of "Are you receiving me?" XTC. How I loved that band etc etc etc"

"nice" I thought

audio engineer/record producer #2 walks out and says : "ah ! yes ! (to the
strains of "Are you receiving me?" XTC. How I loved that band etc etc etc
I've got a whole bunch of their early vinyl , ya know coloured stuff,
freebies etc. would you like them ?"

"even nicer !!" I thought

audio engineer/record producer #3 walks out and says : "ah ! yes ! (to the
strains of "Are you receiving me?" XTC. How I loved that band etc etc etc
I've got a whole bunch of their early vinyl , ya know coloured stuff,
freebies etc. would you like them ?"

no prizes for guessing my answer

audio engineer/record producer #3 walks out and says : "ah ! yes ! (to the
strains of "Are you receiving me?" XTC ! ! ! We opened for them when they
played UCD in Dublin."

....at this point I decided to go home . . .

  The other topic:
The new Heads album is reviewed in the newest Rolling Stone mag,
getting severely panned (2 out of 5). Andy was mentioned but once
(and only in the list of contributors). The gist of the review is
that without Byrne the remaining Heads aren't a very creative band,

Well, I wasn't going to bother about this, as my memory fails me about
specifics, but no-one else piped up as far as I can see, so ...

At the TMBG show at the Mercury Lounge in NYC early this summer, the
John's introduced our favorite little XTC-related tune as a parody of a
supposedly true editorial decision labored over by the folks who brought
you that new Rolling Stone History of R'n'R tome concerning who, given
space considerations, was going to make into the book and who was going

I guess I knew that he'd done _John Henry_... this one slipped my mind when
I was groping for examples in my first post. I'm a big TMBG fan, although
stylistically this is not my favorite of their albums. Simon Knight also
suggested _Our Time In Eden_ from 10,000 Maniacs. Another one that I have
way back in the back of my collection, unlistened to these many years. I'll
have to pull it out again.

Too Much Joy's _Cereal Killers_... Again, I am surprised to hear that Paul
Fox did this one, but on learning so, not at all surprised that it's in my
collection too! Not my favorite TMJ album, either (have to go for _Son of
Sam I Am_ or _Mutiny_ over this) but on reflection I can hear Paul's
influence in it.

(Even further off-topic digression: I read a story on CDNow! that Newt
Gingrich, of all people, had become enamored with one of the tracks from
this CD, the "Theme Song", which featured the lyric "To create, you must
destroy, smash a glass and cry 'Too Much Joy!'". Seems he thought it fit
well with the sentiment of the 1994 Republican revolution. They even had a
scan of a thank-you note on his official letterhead.)

Thanks to everybody who responded with Paul Fox suggestions. Now back to XTC.

Howdy folks, just thought I'd delurk for a change and put in my 2 shillings
for the fellows who keep this thing a-movin'.

Firstly, I love shopping for CDs in New York, because I was able to get the
new TMBG disc on Saturday night. And it comes out tomorrow. So I was
playing "XTC vs. Adam Ant" all day at work. Aah, Nirvana. Well, no, we
can't say Nirvana.

I also picked up Fossil Fuels at a more local record store (Hoboken, NJ)
for the unbelievable price of $33 -- in the cool case. I was staring at it
all night last night. If you contact Kerry who works at the store
(mailto:wiggum@juno.com) maybe he'll be able to work out a deal with ya to
ship it in the U.S. -- I see they had like 4 or 5 copies left.

I met a fellow Chalkholio this weekend (howdy, John!) and we spent much
time listening to music and expounding on the philosophies contained
therein, and then we got into a discussion about how much money a musician
should make before they are considered successful. My theory is that if
someone is capable of making enough money to live solely by music, that's
successful. To me, this means if they don't need another job to pay for
food, rent, etc. I would assume that at least Dave and Andy are able to
subsist on their musical careers -- they're appearing just about everywhere
nowadays and they're very well respected in their field, yadda yadda yadda.
But what about Colin? Has he done anything musical that hasn't been XTC in
the past few years? Does he have a day job? Just wondering.

And is it just me or do the liner lyrics in Fossil Fuels leave some things
out? Sing along to "No Thugs In Our House" and there are three lines
missing in the first verse! What's up with that? And why is "Senses"
edited? That just bugs me. And did they *HAVE TO* use the rated-G version
of "Respectable Street?" I mean, puhleeze! Virgin Records again puts style
before substance and makes a few glaring omissions and misteaks that could
have been solved by a read-through. I should march right in to the Virgin
Megastore, ask to speak to Richard Branson, and wiggle my nose derisively.

Hoping my purchase of Fossil Fuels put some well-deserved cash in the
pockets of my favorite band,

As Mitch Friedman and John know very well,
>>K. McCarty 'Dead Dog's Eyeball' - Songs of Daniel Johnston
is a fine, fine album. It'll make you laugh, it'll make you cry.

Try these lyrics on for size...
"People say that we're an unlikely couple
Doris Day and Mott the Hupple:

Well, they're usually less silly than that. Daniel's songs are like cartoon
drawings
of his manic depression and unconditional love. His early albums were mostly
recorded on a boom box with a Sears chord organ and a Smurfs guitar, his
voice sounds underdeveloped (when he sings "I'm only twenty-two" he sounds
like he's eight) and his sense of rhythm is--to put it politely-- sorta
be-bop. But in
Daniel's world, it all works.
What Kathy McCarty has done is take these line drawings and re-work them in
chalk
and oil paints, sometimes taking what I previously assumed was his right hand
absent-mindedly flopping about the high notes and turned it into a beautiful,
accesable arrangement for strings.

End of soap-box review.

On an XTC note, how can a person such as myself come across the "drunken
jam sessions"? I have a morbid fascination by shit like that.

Ahhh.. yes! A mention of my other favorite pop band of the 90s (the
other being Jellyfish). TMJ are a tour de force in wisecracking fun, a
Mad magazine rock band if you will. Sadly their New York base prevents
them from visiting California much anymore, since they make music that's
too smart for most of the buying public (hmmmm.. sound familiar xtc
fans?) and tours are rather expensive. They have a pretty new CD called
"Finally" that has a censored cover of a couple naked on a bed obviously
just having haad sex. But it also referred to how long it took to record
the record too. good stuff- buy TMJ. You'll like it.

Hi Dave - here in New Zealand (and I think in Australia too) Dear God was
never substituted for Mermaid Smiled. I've never seen a copy of Skylarking
(either on LP or CD) with the track Dear God on it. Here, DG was only a

Can't say I heard the '91 "Live from Andy's shed" (tho I'd love to, how
come I never heard of this before?), but I did hear the '89 Acoustic Radio
tour performances, which were, on the whole, very good. I remember their
MTV show sounded great. And those were new arrangements for acoustic
guitars, yet they were very much together, the only real screw ups being
Andy missing a lyric or two. If our three guys put together a public
performance in earnest, and it sounds like this '91 thing was just them
messing around for fun (correct me if I'm wrong), then I don't think I'd be
going out on a limb to guess they'd work hard to do it well. Especially
Andy being the notorious perfectionist he is.

While I'm at it--
I was listening to the radio again (force of habit) and I noticed that the
guitar solo in No Doubt's "I'm Just a Girl" sounds an awful lot like the
riff from Ten Feet Tall.

And I might as well add--
An XTC-sanctioned compilation CD of old demos?! Forces That Be: please
please please make this a reality! I don't care if it's the dozenth
version, but Young Cleopatra would be a hit!

Here's my oh-so-clever idea for a name: "Shed Lite". Presumably they'd be
recorded in Andy's shed. "Lite" referring to the fact they're not
full-fledged studio recordings. And they'd certainly shed some light on
what direction xtc is headed musically. ....yes? mmm, maybe no.....

Thanks for your patience.

I've seen it somewhere before, but I don't know for sure where it was. Here's
a similar Andy quote from the May 19, 1992 issue of Reflex magazine:

>>"It was just depressing me too much to be out there doing such a

So, you see, it wouldn't be entirely inconcievable that Andy substituted the

You're mistaken, Jes. This is a mailing list, not a newsgroup. Watchdog
groups are preoccupied with protecting children from pornography and other
undesirable elements in cyberspace. Being a mailing list, no one can
crosspost obscene material to this list. However, no such restriction exists
on the newsgroups, so they
can do their worst to everyone through the modern day curse of indiscriminate
crossposting. The newsgroup and chat rooms are the primary concern of these
watchdog groups, not the mailing lists. For someone to find Amanda Owens' XTC
quote, they would have to first know who XTC is (which is not very likely,
they're just not that popular), use one of the search engines to access the
site, access the archives and go through the back issues, post by post. With
the thousands and thousands of mailing lists out there, does this seem
realistic to you?

As for the Beavis and Butthead comment, remember this is an XTC newsgroup! No
one exhibiting Beavis and Butthead's qualities would be caught dead listening
to "Nonsuch". Too pretty, too melodic, too smart...

Anyway, as I was saying...

In Chalkhills 3-5, the honorable Sara Lloyd, poised over her computer, typed

I've never heard of it either. We've got much cooler nursery rhymes here in
the States.

Finally, I believe someone asked what hardtack was. According to my copy of
The Civil War: An Illustrated History (the companion guide to the Ken Burns
documentary), hardtack are "...square flour-and-water biscuits so hard,
some said, they could stop bullets. 'It was no uncommon occurrence,' a
Union veteran remembered, 'for a man to find the surface of his pot of
coffee swimming with weevils after breaking up hardtack in it...but they
were easily skimmed off and left no distinctive flavor behind'." (Geoffrey
C. Ward/Ken Burns/Ric Burns)

Does that make your mouth water or what?

P.S. Does Andy record demo versions of his demo recordings? I'm reading this
Chalkhills article on Dave Gregory and he mentions doing the string
arrangments for the home demo of "1000 Umbrellas" (performed on synthesizer).
How much input do the band members have on each other's demos? I always
thought they worked alone, in solitude, with a cold dark lonely silence

This thread has got rather out of hand. However, I can't fail to mention
that had Life Begins at the Hop been written some 15 years later, perhaps
the lyrics would have been re-written as Virgin Cola on tap!

Please forgive me if this has been addressed in the past; I just signed on
to this list a week ago. I was SURE I was one in a million who followed
XTC throughout the past 10 years - and was pleasantly surprised to find
this list.

Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of XTC's acoustic performance on
MTV that took place in support of their Oranges and Lemon's concert?

Thanks.

Hi fellow XTC-loonies !

In Chalkhills # 2-145 DeWitt Henderson told about the radio tour XTC
made in 1989 in the USA to promote Oranges&Lemons.
I do own a CD of them at two Boston radio stations. On it there are
brilliant unplugged versions of quite a lot of songs plus very funny
and interesting interviews. Unfortunately the sound quality isn't too
good, but it's alright for me. I am willing to tape it for any
interested chalkhillians.

Did anyone else notice, on the press release for FF
(available on the Chalkhills web site), that there were
two misnomers: "This World is Over," and "The Ballad of
Peter Pumpkin Head." Hmmm.

Also - if anyone's interested, there were 2 XTC
references in that bastion of culture, "Entertainment
Weekly." One was in a review of "No Talking, Just Head"
(am I right on the title?), and the other was that the
new Crash Test Dummies album was like a "third-rate XTC."
Speaking of which - CTD fans! Anyone have the new album?
Anyone like to tape it/trade for something with me? I
don't have any $$ to buy the CD yet! Please let me know.

That's it for now. Off to math.

Joshua....I apologise. I didn't read the hwole thing and didn't realise you
were responding to a world class arsehole who had flamed me. Once again,
I'M SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

I must have missed that little complaint about my usage of an actual
Partridge quote, because this is all news to me. All I have to say is WHAT
THE HELL IS THE BIG DEAL?!?!?!?!?!?! I don't know about other countries,
but in this country, otherwise known as the United States, there is a such
thing as free speech. Besides which, the quote came straight from the
horse's mouth, in a Rolling Stone interview from around the time O&L was
released. You may take offense at Mr. Partridge's language and my
subsequent post of it, but don't you EVER DARE refer to me alongside the
likes of Beavis and Butthead again,. whoeverthe hell you are. Who died and
made you God? You don't even know me. I used the quote because I thought it
was a very amusing Partridge-ism about his dislike of touring. I'm sure of
the Man Himself posted to online boards and digests he'd defend me against
people like yourself. God, my blood is about to reach boiling point right
now I'm so mad. Why was I being singled out? I'm not the first person in
the world to say the word "fuck" online, and I certainly won't be the
last. You have got me ticked off beyond all comprehension right now, I
don't even know what to say.

PS-To everyone who defended me, b/c I didn't even know about this whole
thing, thanks. I guess I'll have to quit leaving little quotes here and
there because one little person seemed to be offended. If anyone else was,
please, state your case. Just don't take the name calling route and refer
to me as a childish cartoon.

And another thing, about the comment having nothing to do with the actual
note..I didn't realise taglines had to be in full and complete harmony with
all postings to the net. Sorry, guess I'm just another Beavis and Butthead,
aren't I?

Thanks for listening to this amazingly wretched rant,
Amanda Owens

SO AS NOT TO OFFEND, I WILL POST A HORRIBLY MUNDANE QUOTE TODAY.....

I've not heard "Live from Andy's shed", but I do have the Adventure

sounds great. They are together and with it throughout the whole
song.

Listen, I'd love to keep this copy of FF that I have. But I just can't
afford it now. So, I'll sell it for $35, postage paid. I played only three
songs. It's in mint condition. I'll send it to you when I receive your
check. E-mail me at wwilson@mitre.org

I also have Oasis's "What's the Story, Morning Glory?" on vinyl, new 2-LP
set, for $15 (UK pressing). Bought it, but can't afford to keep it. It has
one bonus track, "Bonehead's Bank Holiday," which is not on the U.S. CD.

By the way, is the new Robyn Hitchcock album any good?

You aren't... and I agree with your comments, except I think that their
first album, 'Son Of Sam I Am' was much more melodic then you're giving it
credit for. Give it another listen! Good to know there are other TMJ fans
out there among Chalkhilians.

Back to XTC... I too went out, sought out, and shelled out a big bag full of
money for the lmt. edition of Fossil Fuels, even though I already own
everything on it. No regrets, though... it does sound great, and I don't
mind spending the money letting them know we're out here. Same complaints
about the liner notes as most everyone else, though... come on, such a cool
cover, I think they coulda spent as much time on the inside. Oh well, the
music is still great, even if I have nothing to read while listening...

This is my first post after reading backissues. I'm soliciting
(not that!) input by much longer-term fans to increase my
musical enjoyment of all things Swindonian.

Only 2 years ago I started with SL and O&L at a used record
store. Savoring my way rather backwards through the catalog,
I've added NS, then ES and TBE. The last was a leap, cos I
hadn't heard a note of it, however, all of them have been
incredibly rewarding ("but of course!" I hear you say).

Eventually all the albums will grace my shelves, but which next?
For my upcoming b'day, what should I hint to my girlfriend as
being *that perfect gift for someone special*: The Black Sea,
Drums and Wires, Go2, Mummer, White Music, or maybe Live in
Concert (BBC 1980) or Drums and Wireless? Curious for opinions
and reasons, and add whether it should be the CD or LP.
>>Any responses can be sent privately to witterkf@aetna.com.<<

After 4+ years of cohabbing, I've been able to convince my
sig-oth that XTC aren't a bunch of "whiny Brits". (Oddly
tough sell, since she's been listening to alternative rock
long before it was a 30-song preprogrammed radio playlist.)

Cherubim not only cheered, but did that wave as well,
Karl

Hello everyone,
This is my first post, greetings from Canada.
My local CD store brought in two copies of the limited edition UK import of
Fossil Fuel. Nothing really unusual about that, it seems to be available
everywhere. What's amazing is the price: $23.99 CDN ($17.50 US, 11.50 UK).
Not a bad price for an import.
If anyone would like the last copy ( I bought the first, of course),
contact me.
(Ther must not be any other XTC fans in my small town - the second copy has
not sold in two weeks!)

Subject: Quotes and notes

I was not surprised to get my share of flames over my last diatribe about
Ms. Owens' use of the f-word in her tagline. I was not surprised because
most of the writers on this forum are open-minded. Perhaps a little TOO
open minded sometimes.

It however is worth defending my point. the usual suspects wrote in to
voice their opinions, so I would like to defend mine. first we have Joshua
Hall-Bachner (who managed to use the word SEVERAL times in his message, to
drive home his point).

>I'm wondering the same thing...but that doesn't mean Andy didn't say it.
>Anyone who hasn't heard the "drunken jam sessions" probably wouldn't
>imagine Andy saying, "C'mon, you fucking assholes, get a move on..."

Yes, I can imagine Andy saying 'how many people can you mind-f*** at once'
but i can also imagine my dad saying it, my colleagues at work, my ex-wife,
and my shrink. but that doesn't make it noteworthy. it was a pointless
quote that had nothing to do with the rest of her message.

it should have been followed by 'heh heh.... heh heh.'

further, he says

>It's said by Andy. It's funny.

Oh, forgot. Andy is God. had we quoted him as saying 'Charmin is
squeezably soft' then it would have been a QUALITY tagline? Puh-leeze.

>So basically, your point is that, instead of having other people tell us
>that we can't use "profanity" or discuss certain things, we should not do
>those things and impose censorship on ourselves? That's silly. The people
>trying to censor the Internet are 100% wrong according to the Bill of Rights
>and the Supreme Court has set precedent by rejecting the Communications
>Decency Act.

If you wanna talk about how GOVERNMENT can do things that are 'wrong' and
get away with it, please refer to Service, Internal Revenue. Anyone wanna
show me where it is in the Constitution that the gov can set up a 'service'
that operates without regard to law, etc.... you see my point. the issue
here is not whether it is 'right' for someone to censor the Internet, the
point is that they CAN. And when stuff like this is tossed about, even
innocently, even without malice, it only gives the Tippers of the world that
much more to work with.

Had the quote added something to her message, had her quote been clever, had
it been WITTY (which is what I think of when i think of Andy's quotes), then
you would have never heard from me.

>merely using words like "shit," "fuck"...what's wrong with that? People do
>it all the time. It's part of the language.

Don't get me wrong. There are MUCH worse things going on with the Internet
than a bunch of people using language that is socially regarded as 'vulgar.'
MUCH worse. But that is still no excuse.

Mark Fisher took me to task as well....

>The implication is that instead of being censored by someone else, we
>should do the censoring ourselves. By the same logic, homosexuals should
>act less gay for fear of angering homophobics; black people should bleach
>their skin so as not to upset white racists; and the disabled should stay
>indoors for fear of alarming the able-bodied.

You censor yourself every day when you are in a social situation where you
should not use certain language. homosexuals, blacks, and the disabled, and
any other analagous group you wish to name in this rather silly diatribe,
cannot and should not 'change their ways' because they may offend certain
groups. the decision to be black, or disabled, or homosexual, is not the
same as the decision to say the f-word in public. and, believe it or not,
when you write something for consumption on the Internet, you are talking in
PUBLIC.

>"Oh, but I was only talking about swearing," will no doubt be Jes's
>defense. But what exactly is it about a combination of four letters that so
>offends?

Don't ask me. Ask your mother. Ask your boss. Ask the guys who regulate
the stuff that goes over the airwaves. For some reason, there are certain
words that bother people. And, in certain company, i simply try to avoid
using them. For instance, there is a word that starts with C that I would
dearly love to use right now, but decorum prevents me from doing so.

And Amanda herself decided to respond to me, but she did it through e-mail
which leads me to think she wants to keep it out of the newsgroup. which is
why i would like the thread to end, thanks. sorry for being such a stick in
the mud. fortunately for me, if this newsgroup were to shut down, if the
entire Internet were to come crashing down around our shoulders, i would not
be affected other than to have to make more phone calls than i do at this time.

As for Paul Fox, I believe he produced the final Sugarcubes album. It had
their big MTV thing on it. Can't recall the name, all I remember was that
it was imminently dancable, but very bland.

Hey Chalkbuddies,

October 8 was a banner day for U.S. chalkies.

Today, They Might Be Giants' "Factory Showroom" came out, including
"XTC vs. Adam Ant".

The Heads' "No Talking Just Head" also came out, including Andy co-
writing and singing on "Papersnow".

Bottom line: Andy's song is sublime, a wonderful lyric especially. As
if you needed to be told that. Most of the rest of the Heads thing is
completely forgetable. There are a few okay tracks, but mostly it's
way too tuneless.

I dig the new TMBG heavily, on the other hand. "XTC vs. Adam Ant" is
fun. The whole thing is charming.

*Important announcement*
If you don't want to plunk down sixteen bucks for either of these,
e-mail me your XTC list and I will trade for any and all of both CDs,
as well as selections from the rest of my XTC stuff.

Or just wait six months. The Heads album will no doubt be kicking
around in cut-out bins for $2.99 before you know it...

If nobody else does it before me, I'll post the "Papersnow" lyrics to
the web page.

Love to all my Chalkhills pals,
