2. Princess Diana (does she still get that title?)
3. Brett Favre
4. Carrie Strug
5. Michael Eisner
6. Helmut Kohl
7. That guy in the Doritos ad whose face is stuck.

Drummers:

1. Ringo Starr
2. Keith Moon
3. Jojo the Dog-faced boy

For our list, lets just call ourselves:

1. Dead-horse floggers

I recall reading in an old interview with Andy that he wanted the cover of
Black Sea to be "dark and Victorian looking" after the clean, modern look of
D&W. While he didn't mention any specific relation to the songs on either
album, to me they are well matched to their songs. I definitely find Black
Sea to be "darker" sounding. As for consistency, I detect a fair amount of
XTC humor poking through every cover they've done since White Music.

Subject: Re-Settlement ?

Dear Chalkies,

Thanks to Stephen Varga for correcting my careless mistake :

>I must correct you Mark. The original UK English Settlement CD
>manufactured by MPO France was originally released in 1984. This was
>probably the first XTC CD to be released along with the Big Express.

This should teach me to check my facts before I open my mouth...
But does this also mean that they could not have included all the
tracks?
I do know CD capacity has changed over the years, I'm just not sure
about when...

BTW: I bought the whole back catalog on CD in a couple of weeks
But I started with English Settlement (of course) and the second one
was Black Sea. This must have confused me i guess...

But Steve also claimed this about "All Of A Sudden":

>the song and video is so boring it's not surprising I forgot to add it!

If you really think this song is boring, you should listen to more
exciting music like the Cranberries :)
Are you serious? Really???

This song is absolutely top-class, both musically and lyrically.
Seminal XTC and one of the euh... pivotal songs on the album IMO.
One of the few songs that are really personal statements.
A bit "difficult" perhaps compared to happy tunes like Pretty Girls
or This Is Pop but certainly not boring.

What's your favorite tune then Steve? Frost Circus? :)))

Regarding the Wrapped In Grey CD single:
Yes, there is someone I know who has one.
( don't worry, I won't tell them! )
And (to make matters worse) there are very strong rumors that a
7" vinyl version was also pressed. Ultra-rare stuff, both.

ta,

Mark

Reluctant to send in your XTC cover for Chalkhills Children?
Maybe this will inspire you . . .

The Elvis Costello internet gang finished a similar project a few months
ago. It was a lot of fun for all of us who participated -- and yes, there
was a wide variance of talent and production -- but we got an unexpected
surprise. Someone in our group met Elvis after a show and gave him our
double-CD tribute (called "Brilliant Mistakes").

That was great . . . but it got better.

Elvis actually listened to it -- and apparently enjoyed it! In an
interview that appeared last month in New Music Express, Elvis talked about
our tribute tape and referred to it as "a wonderful gift that I got in
America." He described it as being "f*cking brilliant!"

Let me tell ya . . . I got goose bumps thinking that Elvis listened to my
song (an electric rave-up of Jacksons, Monk and Rowe) and may have enjoyed
it! And I think Andy and Colin are even more likely than Elvis to give our
tribute a hearty listen. And we certainly have some well-connected folks
on the list to get copies to them.

After the Elvis interview about Brilliant Mistakes appeared in print, there
were folks on the Costello list kicking themselves for not submitting their
songs. You don't want to be in that boat: Submit today!

Jasper

BTW, Why the Terry Chambers slagging? He was quite clever and original, IMO.
"Black Sea" is the most enjoyable album I have ever drummed along to. Try it
sometime -- it is a fun workout from start to finish!

To All Chalkhillians... it's getting to be a little embarassing that
certain among you insist on bashing Todd Rundgren at every
oppurtunity. Andy is brilliant, he should never have to endure
someone else telling him what to do or think or feel, but Todd is
equally as brilliant and was only doing what he had done for twenty
years (and what the record company wanted him to do). In fact, if not
for the success of Skylarking here in the states (limited albeit)
there may not have ever been a O&L or Nonsuch... XTC was about to be
dropped cold by the label. Now I certainly understand TR's reputation
especially with British bands. But despite some rocky experiences
with the likes of Badfinger and the Psychedelic Furs it might be
suggested that both band's best records were produced by Todd
Rundgren. And besides, by now I'm sure Andy has grown bored with
these constant barbs poked at TR... I wonder how many of you have
even listened to albums such as Healing or A Capella? Do yourself a
favor and pick one up. Finally, I have not allowed my allegiance to
Todd detract from my immense respect and enjoyment of Andy
Partridge's body of work. I've known for a long time that TR can be
anasshole from time to time and guess what?... so can Andy!.. perhaps
it's time that Andy just go solo and produce his own records... uh-oh,
I can feel the fire of the flamethrowers even now... feed me to the
sacraficial bonfire!

Subject: Newell's Off White Album on vinyl

I just got the vinyl version of Martin Newell's The Off White Album. It was
issued by Jarmusic in Germany and they have done a great job with it. It has
a gatefold cover and the LP has two bonus tracks on it. The bonus tracks are
"And The World Strikes One" (recorded live in Osaka, Japan) and "Billy The
Barber/The Irish Washer Woman" (recorded live in Potsdam, Germany). "And The
World Strikes One" has Dave Gregory on guitar.

But that's not all! With the first 333 copies they include a free 7"
featuring two more live tracks from Martin's Japan tour. Dave Gregory plays
guitars on both tracks. The songs on this bonus 7" are "Julie Profumo" and
"The Green-Gold Girl Of The Summer". And to top it all off they also included
a large 8" by 12" color photo of the band. They are all dressed pretty crazy
and are probably wasted, with the exception of Dave who really looks out of
place.

I believe Jarmusic also still has vinyl copies of "The Greatest Living
Englishman" for sale. This also features bonus tracks.

Hmm, seems like we (well, I at least) got 2 copies of #2-143. That
John Relph bloke is obviously working too hard... :-)

Anyway, the latest issue of Q devotes an entire page to a review of
Fossil Fuel, and another to a picture of XTC circa 1977. There are
a few glaring errors (e.g. crediting Andy with 'Wake Up'), and the
reviewer seems rather unmoved by 'English Settlement' considering
what a seminal masterpiece it is and all that (remind me to check
what seminal means later...), but on the whole a pretty reasonable
review, and awarded 4/5 stars. The review waxes lyrical (well,
almost) about 'Great Fire', which leads neatly to my next topic:

MUMMER - yes, I've finally cracked it! What a great album. Well it
only took me three years... no wonder the sales figures didn't add
up at the time. Sad to see the aforementioned review notes this
period as a 'creative slump', but there you go. Genius is rarely
recognised at the time, I suppose. Oh well.

PS: Thankyou to whoever it was who posted his expert opinions on
cardboard boxes; that's the first proper laugh I've had out of
Chalkhills in a fair old while. Cheers! :-)

Still here...

Subject: Packaging

From: ZITTEL@aol.com

>Thanks to Simon (nonsuch@dircon.co.uk) for his humorous tongue-in-cheek
>praise of XTC's sleeve art.

Why thank you, Jim. I know the whole thing was couched in deliberate
art-wank and high-falutin' gibberish (which is addictive, actually. Just try
it, you can feel the black turtleneck and the goatee growing on you as you
type the stuff; you cast anxious eyes about, looking for a pipe to smoke),
but there was a serious core to it. The sleeve art work of XTC releases has
always fascinated me, at least until Nonsuch which, though undeniably an
attractive packaging concept, really did strip all individuality from the
singles.

When "Senses..." came out I was at such a low ebb, and so overawed by the
record that the intricate fold-out sleeve seemed so apt - it seemed fitting
that I had to "upwrap" this song which had been a real gift to me. "All You
Pretty Girls" was a fantastic sleeve concept that really made me giggle. As
someone who was a casual fan for many years before becoming a collector, the
unearthing of these wonderful sleeves in record stores was a magnificent
buzz. The death of the 7" single and the acceptance of the 5" CD in a jewel
case has crippled this kind of thing somewhat. I know "King For A Day" came
in a canny sleeve, but it's next to impossible to store anywhere, it falls
over and the pointy bits threaten to bend.

The current packaging innovation seems to be "1 of a 2 CD set" which is all
very well, but it means you end up with one double pack with 2 CD's in it,
and one empty sleeve. Environmentalism, let's go! Or there is the nice round
metal tin, which rolls off your shelf and shatters the contents. A quick
question for you American folk. When I bought an import of the US "English
Settlement" CD (necessary because of the omitted tracks on the UK release)
it came in a long cardboard box, about 2.5 times the length of the CD case.
Is this still common practice over there?

Now, a question for UK collectors. A couple of years back I saw in a record
shop a small boxed set which contained three XTC albums bundled together (I
don't recall which they were, but they were just the standard issue albums).
I was tempted to buy it, but on balance I decided I wasn't really in the
mood for a divorce that week, so I left it. It did seem to be just three
standard albums in a thin cardboard wrapper - no booklets or anything. Does
anyone know about this item? I only saw it in one store - the name of which
walked out on me ages ago - but it wasn't HMV, Our Price or Virgin.

I'm writing this at work, away from my collection, but I will quite happily
talk sleeves with anyone. So Jim, I know where you are and I'll probably be
in touch, but if any others want to weave this thread in Chalkhills let's
bring 'em all in. (Mike Scott reference thrown in for the benefit of my
wife, without whom...I would have a nifty little boxed set of XTC CDs)

Simon.

Certainly, but that implies that we should expect *other people* to always
provide the meat of Chalkhills. If you get sick of skipping, post something
different. I'm sure a lot of people buy a daily paper, but they don't read
every section - they maybe skip, the sport and fashion because they're just

worth it.

I have noted that there are many bass players on the list, including myself,
still I have yet to see posted any tablatures of Colin's mighty fine work.
The Chalkhills archive is chock full of guitar tabs. I would love to see us
work to get some of those up. What say?

Hi! The great XTC bootleg dub offer is underway! So far I have not been too
swamped with requests (only moderately swamped, although I must admit I
have no e-mail swamping frame of reference to draw upon for
comparison). Which means that I should have all of your tapes in the mail
by the end of the month. Unless you haven't sent in your tape by then, in
which case you will not get a dubbed copy of anything because I won't be
dubbing in September, due to religious reasons. You see, in my religion,
September is the Month of Dub Atonement, where me and my followers vow to
abstain from dubbing in order to atone for our past dubbing sins, from
birth to...

Okay, I'll be serious now. You have to the 12th of August to e-mail me blah
blah blah

Hello Chalksters,
To: Roger Carvey, DeWitt Henderson and Todd Bernhardt.
Thanx for the compliments about my recent rambling story about seeing XTC in
concert in '79, and meeting the guys afterwards. I'm glad you enjoyed the
story, and hope others did too.

Todd, to explain the strange phrase uttered by Terry: To "suck more piss"
means to continue drinking. It's aother of those strange British/Australian
euphemisms. Terry could obviously see the state I was in and kindly offered
me a beer (piss) from the big ice-filled barrel that was provided in their
backstage area. This was a better idea than to have attempted an interview,
under the circumstances!

I can see why you may have recoiled from the suggestion, though, Todd!

By the way, does anybody else have their own experiences of seeing the band
perform, or meeting any of the guys, that they may like to share with us? I
remember Robert Triptow's story (a couple of months back) about meeting Andy
at a record signing - I found that quite amusing.

And finally: VIDEO PETITION. I've sent off the letter + all petition
submissions to Virgin UK, and look forward to a response of some kind
(hopefully the one we're crossing our fingers for!) in due course. Thanx
again to all who submitted to me. Please, no more petition submissions.
All we can do now is wait and see.....

'Til next time, Paul

Subject: sam phillips NO XTC CONTENT

Haven't posted in a long while...

I was moved by the person who (rather flippantly) said that Sam Phillips was
now "Godless". No criticism meant to you, but it is not known by ME that
Sam's belief in God has lessened any or at all. What is known is that the
"Christian Music Industry" applied it's standard set of "rules" to Leslie
Phillips and she could not accept that (apparently).

She changed her name to her family nickname "Sam" logged onto a
non-Christian label and started producing an amazing series of records.
However, the musical value of her Christian-label period records is in no
way diminished by this fact. And the apparent "change" in her music is not
so much a change but just having the freedom to express herself with no
musical constraints, and with a sympathetic producer.

I still consider "Love Is Not Lost" (and a number of others!) from her
Christian-label period (this track is best experienced as part of
"Recollection" if you can find it) to be far and away better than anything
she's done since, EVEN THOUGH I love and am astonished by the musical
quality of all of her post-Christian-label period records. Chilling,
haunting background vocals frame that most fragile and sensitive of
voices..."love is not lost...it's not a lost cause..."

Actually, they just keep getting better regardless.

I had the honor of seeing Sam Phillips open for (and perform with on one
song) Bruce Cockburn (another Christian who does not play by the rules). She
played a short set with just an acoustic guitar, and when she opened her
mouth and began to sing, the sound of her voice just poured out like
emotional waves.

This is a voice of MUSIC. It matters not a whit what the person who owns
the voice believes or does not believe...this is MUSIC.

see her if you ever get the chance. please note, I am not a Christian,
although I admire quite a few "Christian" musicians...because they are
musicians. (GOOD musicians...like Phil Keaggy) in my humble honest opinion
i think Sam is probably still a Christian, and more power to her for
actually believing in something in this world of not such nice realities.

but please don't decide for her! as I said, I know you meant no harm by
your remark, but I am very familiar with Sam's work past and present and
feel it should not be judged by who produced it, what label it's on, or what
"period" it's from. the woman is TALENTED!

sorry to ramble on about something so obviously non-XTC related (well COLIN
IS on her latest album!!!!!!!!!!)

thanks for listening,

dave

for the Strine-impaired out there, what Terry was trying to say was "That

Subject: XTC Video Update

Simon Knight has just informed me that he has a video for Heatwave which
was shown on RAGE, a late night Australian music programme. We're both
wondering why this video never appeared on Look Look. Surely this must be
XTC's most obscure video? I wonder how many other Chalkies knew this video
existed?

Simon also informs me that a UK and US version exists for King For A Day
and Peter Pumkinhead. I must admit, I've seen more than one version of
Mayor Of Simpleton. Goodness only knows which version will appear in the
"alleged" forthcoming video compilation!

Thanks for your valuable input, Simon and thanks to all those wonderful
people who unwittingly duplicated some earlier replies. This is how the
final list is looking - unless you know different!

STATUE OF LIBERTY - THIS IS POP - HEATWAVE - ARE YOU RECEIVING ME? - LIFE
BEGINS AT THE HOP - MAKING PLANS FOR NIGEL - GENERALS AND MAJORS - TOWERS
OF LONDON - RESPECTABLE STREET - SENSES WORKING OVERTIME - BALL AND CHAIN -
ALL OF A SUDDEN (IT'S TOO LATE!) - BEATING OF HEARTS - WONDERLAND - LOVE ON
A FARMBOY'S WAGES - HUMAN ALCHEMY - IN LOVING MEMORY OF A NAME - FUNK POP A
ROLL - ALL YOU PRETTY GIRLS - THIS WORLD OVER -THE MOLE FROM THE MINISTRY -
GRASS - THE MEETING PLACE - THE MAN WHO SAILED AROUND HIS SOUL - DEAR GOD -
YOU'RE A GOOD MAN ALBERT BROWN - THE MAYOR OF SIMPLETON - KING FOR A DAY -
THE DISAPPOINTED - THE BALLAD OF PETER PUMPKINHEAD.

Can anyone confirm whether a video was made for Wake Up and The Loving?

Greetings, Chalkhillbillies!

Seeing the number of people who wanted to be on the tape but suddenly
disappeared has been a bit dismaying. I don't represent in any way the
gentleman who's actually assembling the tape, but if you're discouraged by
all this talk of mastering on DATs and CDs, my adviced is don't worry about
it! I did my song on a 4-track and mixed it down onto a cassette. It also
doesn't sound very much like the original at all! It sounds like a guy
with a 4-track having fun. That's what this is supposed to be about, isn't
it? So come on, go back to your tape machines, put on the finishing
touches, and mail it in! We promise not to laugh...this IS the "friendiest
place in cyberspace" isn't it?

Subject: New Survey

Okay, we haven't had a survey in a couple of weeks,
and I guess it's my turn to run one, so here goes .....

I've been interested in just who we all are, in terms of
demographics. There was a little thread going a few
weeks back over age differences, so I thought it would
be interesting to find out about ourselves (what is our
average age, are there really more men on this list than
 women, etc. etc.)

So, please answer the following questions
and send to me (NOT the list) at:
   tken@dictaphone.com
  (use the heading XTC DEMOGRAPHICS).

XTCXTCXTCXTCXTCXTCXTCXTCXTC

1. What is your gender ?
     (male/female)

2. What is your age ?

3. What is your marital status ?
    (single, married, divorced, "living together")

4. What is your sexual preference ?
     (straight, bi, gay, other)

5. Do you have any children ? If YES, how many ?

6. What country do you live in ?

7. How many years have you been an XTC fan ?

8. How long have you been a Chalkhills subscriber ?

All answers will be kept confidential.
(I will ignore all names and email return addresses).
I will ONLY be giving statistics
and averages when I post my results.
Let's pick Friday, Aug. 16 as the deadline.

Again, respond to my email and not the list.

Hey Gang,
A few things-- "Cherry in Your Tree" was a real trip. The producers of the
"Carmen Sandiego" show at first refused to let it be on the album. We had
to lobby long and hard to convince them that the double entendre would not
do any harm to kids. The beauty of the song is that no kid could ever "get
it" and no adult wouldn't. It wasn't until the last minute that it was
allowed on the record.
Also-- my band and I (with an added guitar probably) are going to be doing
some hopefully extensive touring around the East Coast. We have new
management but any connections to hip college or local venues or radio
stations might be helpful. The label I'm on is a solid independent, but
they don't have major resources for payola and other standard music biz
expenditures.
FInally-- I'll post about my web page in the next few weeks. Thanks for
bearing with another bout of self-promotion. And also thanks for all the
positive comments on "The Laughing Man". Everywhere we've played there's
been at least a couple of Chalkhillians.
