In Digest, Volume 13, Number 28

The Colonel wrote: "There is also an XTC version of "I Am The Walrus" with
Colin on lead vocals. Dandy cover, that."

Really? Where?

I need to dig my copy of Without the Beatles out, but was fairly certain
that the track appears credited to Colin's Hermits - ie Dave G and Andy P,
who also performed Strawberry Fields Forever on the Through the Looking
Glass 1967 collection - is there another version somewhere?

Me again.

having checked, it seems that the incarnation of Colin's Hermits on the
Without the Beatles version of I am the Walrus is: Colin Midnite (vocals,
tambourine), David Dreams (vocals, keyboards), Jet Pastorius (vocals, bass),
Rex Rapier (vocals, guitar, radio operator), and Bongo (drums), with The
Proteus Orchestra.

In other words this recording is a Dave solo effort. Dave G also appears on
the Cleaners from Venus' version of Day Tripper. DG also used the pseudonym
David Dreams for his version of Hendrix's Third Stone from the Sun for the
If 6 was 9 compilation, and he previously used the Rex Rapier moniker on the
Cud album Leggy Mambo.

Hello,

Todd Bernhardt told me about this list and how to use it. Thanks to him for
that! I recently did an interview with Andy for my webzine Junkmedia. You
can read it here: http://www.junkmedia.org/index.php?i=2095. I hope you
enjoy and I look forward to being a member of the list.

Cheers,

Laura

I know I got it wrong last time re Jarvis Cocker and Love On A
Farmboy's Wages, but on the rather marvellous new Polyphonic Spree
album The Fragile Army there's a track called Guaranteed Nightlite
which has a brass line which closely mimics the main melody of the
chorus on Church Of Women.

That's not a bad thing as I love both bands. Incidentally anyone
previously put off The Spree by the robes and the long rambling songs
should give this new album a listen if they can as they've lost
both. Getting a producer in has really helped. There's only one song
over 5 minutes and half the tracks clock at a more pop under 4
minutes.

Back to lurking now (and with crash helmet on) until Andy stops
talking about Moonstrance songs on myspace. I'm really sorry, but I've
totally lost interest in what was a great sequence of insights to XTC
songs.

It's now 070707 in Swindon, although not yet in
America, and it's time to post to Chalkhills, as I'm
on record hoping everyone in this community, including
the lurkers, will on this auspicious date.

If you count the days of the week beginning with
Sunday and ending with Saturday, today is actually
7070707.

Here's some breaking XTC news of sub-microscopic
importance: Apple's latest version of iTunes, release
7.3, has reformed its alphabetization regime. Names of
artists, albums, and songs beginning with "A," "An,"
and "The" are now alphabetized by the second word,
numerals now follow Z instead of preceding A, and
punctuation marks are now ignored for purposes of
alphabetization. For example, the spoken track "'...
And Accordinge As I Desired Ther Cam A Letter To Me
Out Of Germany ...'" (double quotes around single
quotes are intentional) from Sting's classical album
*Songs From the Labyrinth*, instead of leading off my
library of 9,300 songs, is now nestled alphabetically
under "And." Artists such as 4 Non Blondes and 10cc go
from the front to the end of the line.

The The is (or "are," for speakers of British English)
not affected by these changes.

What's this have to do with XTC? Andy's "Zonked Right
Out On Life" is no longer anywhere near the bottom of
the list. It's followed by a couple of dozen numeral
titles, including Andy's "2 Rainbeau Melt" and "1000
Umbrellas."

Admittedly, this is news so small you need a scanning
electron microscope to read it. But do we XTC fans
have anything else to talk about?

Yo geeks,

I was shopping in Ikea (Sergeant Drive, New Haven) yesterday when
what to my wondering ears should appear but "Senses Working Overtime"
on the store's P.A. system! I guess those Swedes really know their
music. (Of course, the next song up was "What Have I Done to Deserve
This?" by Pet Shop Boys, so that kind of killed the moment.) Hey,
have you ever heard Jonathan Coulton's song "Ikea"? You haven't?
Well, you should listen to it:

"Long ago in days of yore
It all began with a god named Thor
There were Vikings and boats
And some plans for a furniture store
It's not a bodega, it's not a mall
And they sell things for apartments smaller than mine
As if there were apartments smaller than mine..."

And so it goes...

Speaking of GREAT SONGS, how about that new Crowded House single?
With Johnny Marr on guitar? And Steve Lillywhite producing?
Although I love Tim's contributions, too, it doesn't seem as if the
single suffers much. In fact, this song sounds almost exactly as if
it belongs on "Woodface."

Hope all's well with everyone in Chalkland!

Over at the XTCfans MySpace site (http://www.myspace.com/xtcfans), the
