Hi again All

And there was I saying I'd post again in five years time-... Just dropping
by to say a big THANKS as I've received a number of messages trying to help
me track down Mark Strijbos - I'll reply to you all individually as soon as
possible, but cheers for the quick response! Also, thanks for those who
have offered their kind services as Guitargonauts webmaster - I'll be in
touch with you all also and ask you some `technical' questions and see if
you are able to help DG and I out (but be kind to me and promise not to
laugh - I might well work in IT but website stuff is a bit beyond me - I can
cope with content and design but the workings and the `pipework' is a
different story!) Colin's Drums and Wires gold disc also caused a flurry of
interest and I'm well chuffed to know that some of you would be mighty keen
to own and care for it!! I think I'll list it on Ebay to give those
interested a fair chance and see what happens so do keep an eye out real
soon if you are interested.

Cheers all - it's nice to know your XTC mates can help you out in times of
need!! Maybe I'll post again soon??

Are Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding ...

(I made sure to get the XTC reference in early, just
in case I forget)

... and the giants of West End and Broadway musicals a
hundred floors above the best of the hip-hop/rap
composers in the Tower of Song, as Leonard Cohen might
say? Yes. And would it be a mistake for me to serenade
an anorexic Women's Studies major with Sir MixaLot's
"Baby Got Back"? Yes.

Well, no, if it would get her to leave, but yes, if it
would get me hauled into Doubleplusungoodspeak court.

I never argued either point to the contrary, despite
what Chalksibling HomeFrontRadio appears to believe in
Digest 13-20. Work with me here, Homie! Rap has, to
this point, not advanced far. True, it gives voice and
vent to the inchoate frustration and rage of, blah
blah blah. (Can we all speak
Masterofsocialworkdissertationese here?) But as art,
or even as pop, which is a low form of art, it has not
yet amounted to much. It may still achieve artistic
significance, and that is one of three good reasons to
follow it. The other two: It is of unquestioned
importance in the sociopolitical sense, and it can be
lots of fun.

For the aforementioned anorexic Women's Studies major
to get a grin out of "Baby Got Back," she would have
to be another Camille Paglia in terms of intellect and
sense of humor, and what are the odds of that? You'd
do better to wager that Colin will show up at Andy's
door tomorrow morning with a dozen fresh demos under
his arm.

Kudos to HomeFrontRadio for saying "Baby Got Back" is
"far more 'Dr. Demento' than 'in flagrante delicto.'"
It's a great turn of phrase. I'll celebrate that part
of your post -- but not your fatuous promise to commit
sexual violence upon a musician.

P.S.: Here's the perfect feckless tomato can for XTC
to be paired up against in next year's Band Madness
tournament: Pink Lady and Jeff. Why am I wasting even
one brain cell remembering that name?

Hi:

Ben quoted PopMatters' review of Monstrance:
> Definitive beats are hard to find, as is anything
> remotely melodic. Even more elusive are completed structures or a
> sense of definable direction."

I'm sorry, but what a fucking load of crap. "Definitive beats" are all
over the album; there are many strong melodies, some of them
heart-achingly lyrical in nature; and anyone with any sensitivity at
all to the Muse can immediately sense a "definable direction" and
development to each song.

Sorry, but it gets my panties all in a bunch when I see shit like this
published. The writer obviously has no place reviewing music, and the
site shows its journalistic irresponsibility by running such a facile
and just-plain-wrong review.

> Whew! And I'm the guy who gets quoted on the Ape House site? C'mon
> now! My review looks positively smashing next to this one!

Indeed it does! You got posted because you had the distinction of
being first out of the gate. So worry not -- not everyone gets quoted
by Andy Partridge and written to by Jason Falkner in the course of
several weeks, mein Gott...

Simon, you crack me up. Great post back about baby's back.

Ryan, I have to say that as a teenager in 1979 and eagerly awaiting
new XTC material, I was horrified when said new material was called
Making Plans For Nigel. At the time I could have kicked Mr Moulding's
arse. It made my life at school a misery for a couple of weeks (normal
attention span of teenagers). Some people still mention it now believe
it or not...anyway I'm rather proud of it now. Not many people have
theme tunes.

An interesting factoid for you all. I was reading in my local
newspaper recently that following a gun amnesty in South Yorkshire,
all the recovered weaponry was melted down in the Sheffield steel
works of the very song in question, Making Plans....maybe the future
of British Steel is to melt the guns? cool.

Clear blue sky goes Sheffield grey......

Hi all,

No kidding, doesn't this subliminal hit from the fifties remind you
of the cover of GO2? It's quite post-modern at any rate!
