Since everyone's been talking about how they get good leads for music here on Chalkhills, I thought I should bring your attention to a few bands you may enjoy. The new album from Head Of Femur, 'Ringodom or Proctor,' has been stuck in cd player for a while now. I hear a lot of XTC influence in these guys' sound, more of the early 'Drums & Wires'/'White Music' type stuff, but some of pastoral pop as well... even a little Dukes psych. There are a couple of free downloads from their album at Amazon.com. It may take a few listens, but the songs on this album are amazing. Also, anyone who hasn't picked up The Shins latest, 'Chutes Too Narrow,' it is a great great pop record. One of the best of 2003, for sure. And finally, if you're interested in the outer reaches of pop music, there are several bands that I am personally involved with, and you can get more details on them at http://gelatinousproductions.i8.com ... My high school friends and I listened to radio stations like WLIR, WNYU and WPIX. That's where I heard XTC and immediately became a fan. At the time, I taped my best friend's singles onto cassette but since then I've bought every LP, 12", 45, CD, 3" CD etc. One regret I had was missing out on a chance to see them live in NYC. -Krys O.

Who knows, I might have even seen them live. But no. I didn't get into them until the Mayor of Simpleton reached out through my car radio speakers, grabbed me by the collar, and made me drive straight to the record store to buy Oranges and Lemons. This despite the fact that I was given a cassette of GO2 back when it was fairly new. I was a goofy teen who listened almost exclusively to the Beatles. I figured there was no modern music for me. Back thn I didn't have tons of cassettes and whatnot piling up around me, so I gave this a careful listen. I didn't get it. Thought it bad. Shat on it. It seemed out of tune and too weird. Oh, the shame. Oh, the pleasures delayed until adulthood which might have been more righteously enjoyed as a teen. Jim PS Perhaps a description of the arizonachalkhillwives would help us? Do they sing any particular song? How many breasts do they have?

And, Andy's bass lines are always so understated (despite being so purrrty) and he hides them in his mixes....listening to the track I can just imagine the whole song opening up and flourishing had it been given a full treatment. I do love the buzz though that comes from hearing a new Partsy song......although I think it may be rehashing some of the beer buzz from last night, but hey....its all good.....8^D Harrison, I hear Goodbye Humanosaurus, Goosey Goosey, and Rip Van Reuben all through this song, fwiw....but it could just be that damn drum machine..... best, -- james

Picked up the reissue for Gene Clark's "White Light"--one of my favorite albums finally got better with some demos. The Church's latest Forget Yourself is also quite good. Picked up the Mobile Fidelity Sound version of Lennon's "Imagine". I was reluctant at first because of the price but it does sound much better than the regular version. It has more depth, better clarity and more low and high end. Yes, once again I'll recommend Judee Sill's marvelous second album from Rhino Handmade "Heart Food". It appears that emails pay off as well. I've been emailing Rhino and Rhino Handmade for quite some time requesting "The Name of This Band is Talking Heads". It appears they might issue it after all. It's only taken two years of requests. Who says record companies don't listen? They do. When they can take more money from you for something they already have put out before.

I'll be forever grateful to Nina for letting me have her extra 3D and 5 Senses EPs, until those songs ended up as bonus tracks on recent CD rereleases, those songs just weren't available in the States.(I think some of them are on Waxworks, though, now that I think of it)

Looks like they made more than one. Great song, very Andy with the quirk factor upped to maximum. I only heard it three times but it's been stuck in my head, driving me absolutely nuts for the last few days. I can't imagine it being a hit in any way, shape or form though. Still, I'm hoping for a single release - the songs apparantly available on I-Tunes but I want my hard copy. Any word on if he's written any other music for the series? I've seen the first episode and was disappointed the other music they used was the usual 'tame sensitive alt. rock' snorefest (think Smallville or Dawson's Creek). I'm hoping it was just temp music for the pilot. The show itself seems to be another in the genre of 'person is given messages to meddle in other peoples lives / events for the better' ala Early Edition and Tru Calling, and isn't half as strange as it thinks it is. At least we got a great song out of it!

Then, occasionally, something happens that forces me out of my hiding. Today's "happening" occurred via one of my "guilty pleasures" of the past, the Moody Blues. I was a fan of theirs, big time, in the old days, and had just picked out the old records and listened to them again for the first time in years (in >20 years, in one case). This got me to surfing the net; I was reading about how their hippy-era record "In Search of the Lost Chord" got its name when I saw this: * * * * Jimmy Durante recorded a song called "The Guy Who Found the Lost Chord," which recounts an old English legend about, in the words of Mike Pinder, "an organist who, while practicing one day, hit a particular chord which elevated his consciousness and he experienced what might be called nirvana or a glimpse of heaven -- perhaps a trance of sorts. However, as with all forms of stimulants, it was short lived and he moved one hand and could not find that special chord again. He spent the rest of his life searching for it." Mr. Pinder credits this legend and the Jimmy Durante song as having had a major influence on him during his early years growing up in England during the final years of WWII. The legend is also related in a poem, "A Lost Chord" by Adelaide Anne Procter (1825-1864) which can be found in the poetry anthology "A Treasury of the Familiar", and the song "The Lost Chord" was recorded by Reinald Werrenrath prior to Jimmy Durante's version. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it selfsame Jimmy Durante who uttered the famous words, "I'm in Ex-Tee-See," leading to the very name of our favorite group? Who would have thought Jimmy Durante would have such a profound effect on pop/rock history? Another parallel (and if you remember the famous Swindon mural, you'll know what's coming now): Both groups boast Swindonites as members, namely all of XTC, but also one -- the most famous -- Moody Blue, Justin Hayward. And to close, both the Dukes of Stratosphear and Justin Hayward were also contributors to the "Wish List" CD for MS aid. Now that I'm out of lurk mode, perhaps I will finally get around to telling everyone how great I think "King For a Day" is. At some point, I might even actually send in the list of my favorite tracks on the CD. (But don't wait up.) Additionally, I might send in my list of "best CDs" of 2003. (But don't wait up.) But while I'm here, the short versions of both, just in case: KFAD Top Track: "Then She Appeared" by Morningwood B. A. Top CDs of 2003: - "The Complete Pet Soul" by Splitsville (better than I expected, and better than both The Waking Hours and The Fountains of Wayne) - "Ringo Rama" by Ringo Starr (big surprise - "Ringo"-style music, 20 years on.
