I'd heard of the Cleaners compilation CD; I thought it was supposed to
be out already. The Cleaners / Brotherhood of Lizards / Newell link
has been firmly established in XTC-dom, as the Lizards' "Green Tour"
of the UK was covered in _The Little Express_, and a longtime XTC fan
(whose name escapes me at the moment) has been offering tapes of
obscure (aren't they all) Cleaners and Lizards releases to fans for
some time now.
And I thought the "Rock Opera" was the Captain's most recent album,
_The Universe of Geoffrey Brown_. It's been out a while, but it is
hard to find. Perhaps there is an even more recent album...? Oh, and
if anybody finds a copy of The Captain's _Holiday In My Heart_
CD-single, I'll buy it (or trade for an XTC Acoustic Radio Tour Tape).

If Steely Dan can tour in 1993, then XTC can tour as well. I'm sure you're all
familiar with the fact that Steely Dan hadn't toured in 20 some-odd years,
before their recent hops around the US. Didn't see them myself, as tickets were
eaten up in 20 minutes for a performance at the notoriously ugly Shoreline
Ampetheater in Mountain View, California (built on a former garbage dump - and
some would argue with the word "former").
Evidently, the performance was one would expect from a studio-band: uneven. So,
who knows what XTC would sound like on the road for a few months? Andy should
bring the wife and kids if it makes him feel better - play only small clubs,
while seated at chairs, like Robert Fripp ;-)
Quote from the t-shirts on sale at the Steely Dan concert:

(Dave Gregory is _the_ Steely Dan fan in XTC, btw. "Chalkhills and Children"
has a twee little keyboard fill that sounds quite a bit like the bridge notes
inbetween the verse and chorus of "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" Fridgian?

Subject: what guitars do they use?
DEAR XTC folks,
I have a question that I once saw the answer too in some magazine
when I wasn't a fan so I know it exists...
- What kind of guitars/effects/amps do they use? They consistantly
have the best, most classic sounds that seem to imply classic
equiptment... old les pauls, old vox/marshall amps etc. any input?
- I just bought an old EARTH amplifier which can get some of their
sounds but only about 5% of them. HELP.
THANKS and PS: I'd love to trade some tapes. I have two DAT decks.
cassette is OK too.

I don't agree. Andy's vocal style, at least in their live days, was not one
that needed to be particularly relaxed to work, and I don't see playing faster
live as necessarily a problem. In fact, one of the things I like about XTC
live is that they did vary things a bit, not always playing the songs exactly
as they recorded them, which is really boring. They did some really nice
segues between songs, too.
As for big-arena shows, I don't think they ever did any -- the English
Settlement tour was booked into theater-sized venues, a few thousand seats.
