Subject: Japanese inserts

        Just wondering if anyone has tried to translate the Japanese in any of
the CD inserts.  There could possibly be some interesting stuff in some of
these.  For instance, from the bits of english used the "Demo Tracks"
discussion the "Gribouillage" disc is mentioned along with what appears to be
other releases from "Nonsvch".
        I'm sure that between all of us, we have the complete collection of
Virgin Japan imports.  I personally have "Mummer", "Beeswax" and "Demo Tracks".
All three have some sort of garb.  If anyone knows what they say, I'd love to
know.

Subject: USA 1980 Bootleg CD/Tattooed on His Arm

Is the recent "USA 1980" CD bootleg the same show as the well-known
Hammersmith December 22, 1980 show now commercially available on the
Windsong label? The song line-up looks the same, but the Hammersmith
show was recorded not in the USA but in England.

I have just heard their cover of "Nigel".
Whaow ! That's what I call a disaster.
I bet you Colin will have less than 6$ of royalties....
Anyway while I am writing to chalkhills let me tell you that
-  The tiny circus of life has completly disappeared from the French selves...
-  I have yet to handle a copy of this French free 5-demos CD. I have seen
a photo of it, and I hear this radio MC who he's giving 5 of them each
day in a random competition
(Phone and give a number between 1 and 25, if you are right ou have won..
Rather clever game in'it ???)
But I am now convinced that due to Andy's change of mind, the promo efforts
of Virgin France ended in a disaster...

does anyone know what the "XTC picture CD UK 3-CD box set" _is_? what does
it have on it - anything weird that can't be had anywhere else?

a random thought or two about _Live in Concert 1980_ - when I first listened
to it I was really disappointed, by the way Andy's voice is completely raw and
(especially on "Respectable St.") kind of ridiculous-sounding, and in general
the whole thing seemed sort of second-rate as compared to _Black Sea_ and
_Drums & Wires_, at least in terms of the live versions of the songs being
improvements over the studio versions. but of course, the more i listened to
_Live in Concert_ the more i grew to like it, not because i liked Andy's
cold any better but because i think you can really hear the great guitar stuff
that's going on much more clearly than you usually can in the studio. every
time i listened to it i would notice some new little filip that i hadn't heard
the last time. also i like the little comments Andy & Colin make - "All right:
it's time to adjust your buttons, ladies and gentlemen - you're living in
respectable street!" - and the crowd being equally silly (dreadful knit-wear,
etc.). and now i find when i listen to _Black Sea_ it seems kind of slow and
unexciting compared to _Live in Concert_. (_Drums & Wires_ doesn't suffer
half as much - probably because not as many songs from it were played as from
_Black Sea_.) anyway, i don't really know why i thought this whole little
thought process was relevant, but...[shrug].

my "bull" hasn't arrived yet, even though as far as i know, my check was
cashed by the L.E.

oh - after "Scissor Man" on _Live_, isn't that what's called "Cut It Out"
on the back of "Love on a Farmboy's Wages", also with "English Roundabout"
and "Burning w/ Optimism's Flames"? It sure sounds like it to me...

Subject:      Review (brief): Jellyfish

Just a quick note: the new Jellyfish album is out, called "Spilt Milk".  If
you've never heard them, imagine some parts of different concentrations of
the following: XTC/Dukes of Stratosphear, The Beatles, Queen, Brian Wilson.
I'm not a big expert on the Jellyfish, so I don't know how this compares to
their other releases, but I just thought I'd mention it.  Worth a listen.

I agree wholeheartedly.  That's a great song!  It's got a great hook,
very funny lyrics, and is nicely performed and produced.
Unfortunately the remainder of the album didn't grab me, so I traded
it away.

Subject: Jules Verne's Sketchbook b/w Live in Brussels & interview

This past weekend (2/13), I picked up a pirated copy of Jules Verne's
Sketchbook.  Basically, it looks like someone photocopied the original and
that's about it.  No extra info.  The guy I got it from was up at the
convention (in Minneapolis) from Chicago ("gosh, that helps!").  On the
remaining minutes of the tape are clips from a live performance in
Brussels, most of which are tunes from English Settlement - Snowman, No Thugs,
Jason & the Argonauts, Runaways, etc.. Also an interview which I haven't had
the time to listen to yet.  Sound/recording quality is MUY acceptable.

Also, just received the XTC concert CD from ROIR imports, which operates out
of NYC.  It was $19.95, and if you can't get it any cheaper at home, here's
the address.  There's no shipping charge and they UPS it to ya.  Hey!
