Which leads me to the question: Does anyone know if Terry is still drumming, or should I say "making music" (lest I incur the wrath of all those sensitive drummers on this list)? From past Chalkhills, I understand that he moved to Australia with his family. Considering Australia's healthy pop music scene, it seems likely that he could land a spot with a good band, eh? I'm more than just a little curious because I remember being *extremely* impressed by Terry's drums the one time I saw XTC perform live (Stone Club, San Francisco, ~1980). I got backstage after the gig and shook his hand, thinking "All that sound came from this little guy? Jesus!..." Next time you listen to a Chambers-era XTC album, notice how far "forward" in the mix Terry's drums are placed. Good thing, too! I believe he was/is one of the most rhythmically intricate and unpredictable drummers around (I wonder if he ever played jazz? Hmm...). [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sun, 21 Apr 91 13:07:47 EST From: meep@wpi.wpi.edu (MEEP) Subject: Skylarking questions I've seen a lot of discussion in back-issues of Chalkhills about the concept behind *Skylarking*, how it was "ruined" by Todd Rundgren, etc. Now, maybe it's just me, but I have a tough time tying this album to more than a loose concept (sort of general bittersweet nature of life), and I have to admit, I think the production (both technical and artistic) is uniformly excellent. As a matter of fact, I would rank *Skylarking* as my favorite piece of modern music (and tied for my second favorite of all time, losing only to Beethoven's 9th and tying with Beethoven's 6th). So, what am I missing? Is there something in the interviews (none of which I have ever found) that reveals the shocking truth? Or do people just really dislike this album and try to cover by blaming it on Mr. Rundgren? I know that Colin Moulding quit the band at one point over dispute with Rundgren, but the only *concrete* piece of meddling I know of was the killing-off of "Dear God" (which, to my mind, doesn't belong on the album anyway...I love "Dear God," but I don't feel it fits *Skylarking*). Would some kind soul enlighten me? I'm sure I'll be flamed for liking *Skylarking*, since it seems to have pariah status, but I'd like to hear from you anyway, abusive or no. doug

A few things :
First of all, the price of *English Settlement* seems to have dropped
simultaneously with the re-releasing of the first 5 CDs. I've seen it for
$12.99 recently (down from $15 or $16 previously).
Two. As an XTC fan but not (yet) a fanatic, I haven't heard most of
the extra CD-only tracks, and was wondering if anybody could give me
their opinions (which ones are the best, which are just filler, etc).
I'm most likely going to buy most of the newly-midline CDs eventually
(though probably not *D & W*, which never really appealed to me save
a few songs) but need to plan out which to buy first. ;)
Finally, in somewhat of an interesting turn -- one of the stores
I was checking prices at the other day had a small pile of records
they were giving away. Rummaging through this stack, I came up with
a copy of *Big Express* in an old *Black Sea* green paper jacket.
I've actually never heard this one (the three songs on *Compact XTC*
did not impress me), so I picked it up. Nothing to lose, eh? ;)

Access for the present is limited to anonymous FTP, which should accomodate most of those on the Internet (about 80% of the list). There may be a mail archive server available in the future; I will keep you posted of the details as they become available. Those who cannot get to the archive by FTP may continue to send file requests to me at <chalkhills-request@chalkhills.org> and I will fill them as quickly as possible. The contents of the archive are at present rather modest: a collection of the Chalkhills digests; the lyrics files for the albums; and the discographies. OK, here's the scoop: the archive is on the host turbo.bio.net (NOT presto.ig.com where the list lives; presto is down the hall from turbo, and they're both on the same Ethernet, but we run them for different groups). The IP address of turbo.bio.net is 134.172.3.69. The files are in the directory "chalkhills". The file "00README" is this file. The file "Index" contains a listing of the Chalkhills digests and their subjects. The digests are found in the subdirectory "digests" and are named "Digest.NNN" where NNN is the number of the digest.
